The engine stumbles, wont take gas, and then shuts down. I put a new fuel pump on and a new fuel filter. Pump shuts down when the engine stalls, then pumps intermittently with the engine stalled. The car will restart if i let it sit for a long period. It then will run for a few minutes then stall out again, or start running normally. Any ideas?
Hi,
If I understand your concern, the car stalls and dies, will not restart immediately but will after sometime. This could be anything and the best diagnostic action would be to have the car's computer scanned for fault/error codes.
In any case, initial suspect would be an overheating and/or intermittent electrical component. This would include:
Often the relays and fuse for the engine is located in a common block/box near the battery. In some instances there would be likewise would be under the dash or any of the kick panels.
To help you narrow down the probable fault, next time the engine stalls or will not start, pls try below procedures.
Most gasoline engines would need only two (2) elements to run; fuel and ignition (spark) at the right moment. Based on your post, "start running normally", it would then be assumed that the "at the right moment" is good. Next to check then would be for the presence of spark; this
could be performed by removing one of the spark plugs, reconnecting the
said plug to its wire, let it rest on any exposed metal and crank the
engine. There should be a pulsating spark at the end, if yes then
problem is most likely elsewhere, if none, then next to check (depending on the engine type) would be the:
If there is spark and yet
would not run, then the fuel delivery to the engine has to be checked.
Since you have replaced the fuel pump and filter, we can focus on the engine side. There are two checks on the injector:
In some instances, it could be the alarm/security/immobilizer acting up which prevents the engine to run.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
Hi again,
Based on your last post, it is highly possible that there are dirt, sand and accumulated debris in the tank and presumable along the fuel line all the way to the filter and even possibly the high pressure pump before the injectors. Perhaps your best bet would be to completely clean the fuel delivery system including the tank. Unfortunately, in your particular case, I believe that adding injector cleaners in your tank would not be enough.

It sound like you have an injector problem. the injectors may not be giving the engine enopuph gas to run. so the engine will stall. the fuel pump with shut down as a saftey measure.
have you injectors cleaned and checked for consitancy.

We replaced the injectors today and the problem still persists. When the problem first occurred when first started. Then it would run. Now it starts normal, and dies dies after about ten minutes of driving. Will not start till next day most times, but will die again. When we replaced the fuel regulator it ran for about 10 minutes, then wouldnt start. When we replaced the injectors it ran 10 minutes then wouldnt start. The car sat for years before we recently got it running again. After we got it running it ran for a few weeks with no problems, but now this.
When it stalled one time, i left the key on, the fuel pump would come on, then stop, then start, i looked under the hood and i could hear the solinoid clicking. the fuel pump should should not run with engine stalled am i correct?
