My 1990 hyundai excel......

The engine stumbles, wont take gas, and then shuts down. I put a new fuel pump on and a new fuel filter. Pump shuts down when the engine stalls, then pumps intermittently with the engine stalled. The car will restart if i let it sit for a long period. It then will run for a few minutes then stall out again, or start running normally. Any ideas?

    We replaced the injectors today and the problem still persists. When the problem first occurred when first started. Then it would run. Now it starts normal, and dies dies after about ten minutes of driving. Will not start till next day most times, but will die again. When we replaced the fuel regulator it ran for about 10 minutes, then wouldnt start. When we replaced the injectors it ran 10 minutes then wouldnt start. The car sat for years before we recently got it running again. After we got it running it ran for a few weeks with no problems, but now this.

Hi,

If I understand your concern, the car stalls and dies, will not restart immediately but will after sometime. This could be anything and the best diagnostic action would be to have the car's computer scanned for fault/error codes.

In any case, initial suspect would be an overheating and/or intermittent electrical component. This would include:

  • relays;
  • fuse;
  • fuse holder;
  • connectors.
Often the relays and fuse for the engine is located in a common block/box near the battery. In some instances there would be likewise would be under the dash or any of the kick panels.

To help you narrow down the probable fault, next time the engine stalls or will not start, pls try below procedures.

Most gasoline engines would need only two (2) elements to run; fuel and ignition (spark) at the right moment. Based on your post, "start running normally", it would then be assumed that the "at the right moment" is good. Next to check then would be for the presence of spark; this could be performed by removing one of the spark plugs, reconnecting the said plug to its wire, let it rest on any exposed metal and crank the engine. There should be a pulsating spark at the end, if yes then problem is most likely elsewhere, if none, then next to check (depending on the engine type) would be the:
  • high tension wires;
  • distributor;
  • distributor cap;
  • rotor;
  • ignition module;
  • ignition B+12.
If there is spark and yet would not run, then the fuel delivery to the engine has to be checked. Since you have replaced the fuel pump and filter, we can focus on the engine side. There are two checks on the injector:
  • electrical - pulsating +12 on each of the injectors while cranking, if none, check the ECM/ECU;
  • fuel spray - you need to remove all and check if each will spray fuel (while cranking). For safety reasons, pls have several disposable containers ready to catch the fuel, paper towels or rugs to wipe/clean off any spilled raw fuel. If yes, problem is elsewhere, if not and no pulsating +12 while cranking, ECM wiring or connector, if there is pulsating +12 yet no fuel spray, then defective injectors or defective high pressure pump.
In some instances, it could be the alarm/security/immobilizer acting up which prevents the engine to run.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

    Based on your last post, it is highly possible that there are dirt, sand and accumulated debris in the tank and presumable along the fuel line all the way to the filter and even possibly the high pressure pump before the injectors. Perhaps your best bet would be to completely clean the fuel delivery system including the tank. Unfortunately, in your particular case, I believe that adding injector cleaners in your tank would not be enough.

It sound like you have an injector problem. the injectors may not be giving the engine enopuph gas to run. so the engine will stall. the fuel pump with shut down as a saftey measure.
have you injectors cleaned and checked for consitancy.

1990 hyundia excell will not stay running.new fuel pump.help?

Sounds like the fuel pump is not coming on. I recall an owner stating there is a common problem on your model excel having to do with possibly an internal short in the ecu, or a connector problem with the pump signal wire at the ecu. I would have a qualified shop test the wiring for the pump.

I dropped the fuel tank to drain old gas.I put new gas in and turned engine to start it didnt start. Should I be able to hear fuel pump if it is working?This is for a 1990 ford e-150 van.Also where the is...

Turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine. You should hear the fuel pump running for 5 seconds if working. This primes the gas to the injectors when doing this. If not heard running check the oil pressure switch for the 12 volts needed to run the fuel pump starts there on that harness. When the engine starts and the oil pressure reaches the normal pressure the computer shuts off that circuit and turns on the fuel pump relay to run the pump. The relay stays on till you shut the engine off

Wont start , no fuel getting to fuel pump

Are you sure there is gas in the tank? I "fixed" more than one car that came in for a fuel pump replacement that ran out of gas. If you have gas, check the fuel pump fuse, fuel pump relay, check for power to the fuel pump. check wiring, kinked lines, clogged fuel filter. Sometimes new FI cars are hard to prime if there is air in the system. Take off the air filter and have someone squirt fuel down the throttle body while you crank the engine. If it fires, you know it's not getting fuel, but when it does fire , it may prime the pump enough to run.

Ford1504x4 1990 5.o my truck runs like it is lossing power. i put bosh plugs and excel wires with cap and rotor. egr check out ok. it sometimes POPS when i step on the gas and acts like it its running out...

Check fuel pressure at fuel rail. Must have 45-50 PSI. There is also a fuel pump on the frame before the engine and after the fuel tanks. POPING occurs with lean fuel mixture or crossed plug wires.

Engine shuts down

This is probably a bad fuel pump. Maybe the fuel pump is going bad gradually, wherein it will work now and fail after. Consider replacing your fuel pump.
