You will need to replace the 3-4 shift solenoid inside the tranny - either it works or doesn't - alternatively it could be the wire... not a big deal, but the shops charge for that..
you may have a hard time finding the part for that year vehicle -don't worry, just get creative and ask around,. I found one for my 1992 ford ranger at a local amco transmission shop, where the guy went into the closet and pulled out a used set of solenoids for 40 bucks cash, whereas the ford dealer would not help, could not access the part, yet the phone at ford cust service provided an aftermarket parts hot line..

it's not that big a job as it may sound, as long as you have a place to jet the car up off the ground, securely block it up safely and patience with all the oil from the drain pan,. Use cardboard, newspapers, etc and remove the shift assembly after the pan removal - note which bolts go where and you should be good to go..

Do you have and engine light on ? if so what code is stored in the transmission control module. A lot of the General motors cars like yours Have what they call a TCC solenoid this controls the torque converter lock up . they also have shift solenoids for each shift the car makes . these solenoids are all located on the valve body which is located under the side cover on the transmission . Now to test these you can back probe at the transmission harness . There are certain ohms that each solenoid is suppose to be at , at a certain temp .( 3-5 ohms at 70 degrees ) I do not have the specs for them but they will need to be tested . I would go to a trans shop and have them test drive the car and scan for codes. this will help lead you to a proper repair

Thanks that was very helpful. I was basically told the same thing by a friend of mine.
Yes the check engine light is on and the code called for a bad Throttle Control Sensor which I replaced but did not do any good. The code also called for a bad O2 sensor.
I have changed fluid and filter in my 2005 Altima and it shifted hard from 1st to 2nd so I added Lucas transmission conditioner does it take a while to work
