First trick to do is change the filter. But you need to keep and reuse the old fluid. Yes its sounds strange but it some times works. Now if that does not work, then you need to have your transmossion serviced. Because the bands inside are bad. No the avg. joe can't do it. I still wont touch a transmission and I been working on car and big rigs for the last 20 years.

Sounds like it could be the connection of the shifting solenoid(s) in the transmission. The are attached to the shifting assembly in the tranny itself accessible once the pan is removed (and oil drained of course). These solenoids are on or off work or do not. they are powered electronically so a bad connection could be a culprit, however it is not uncommon for a wire to become disconnected and then burn the terminals off them.. not a big deal for a backyard mechanic, as long as you plan the oil could make it messy...
