Cooling fan 1999 chevrolet cavalier radiator cooling fan does not seem to be working outside air temp is 105 all fuses good ,relay is good .does the temp sensor control the fan and does it control temp gage as well. car shows no dtc codes
my cooling fan does not work and is causing all kinds of problems with the coolant, the coolant pipe that goes into the head has a pin hole in it and also my coolant tank is has a crack in it i think those two things happened because of the fan not workingmy cooling fan does not work and is causing all kinds of problems with the coolant, the coolant pipe that goes into the head has a pin hole in it and also my coolant tank is has a crack in it i think those two things happened because of the fan not working
My Cavalier keeps overheating. I have changed the engine, new radiator, thermostat 3 times, repaired holes in the cooling pipe, replaced the water pump, now last night, replaced the computer..aaaaaaahhhhhhhh My fan was only working periodically, but the fan does work when the ac is on. Also the temperature sensor has been replaced as well. My car's thermostat gauge never went over half way before, now I'm told that most Cavaliers stay around 3/4's ( what the gauge shows). I had the same problems. I hard wired the fan and it will show a fault with a check engine light but... changed out the thermostat and it's good to go. The fan is still not coming on until it feels like it if it gets pretty hot, but at least I now know why the check engine light is on... because I told the fan to come on.I had the same problems. Whoever told you the temperature gauge on cavalier is normal 3/4th is the lie. It is however in operating temperature range but on the hot side. Have you flushed your coolant and replaced thermostate, and gotten air vapor locks out.

Three thing you need to be concerned when the cooling fan fails to turn on, the fan, the fan relay, the coolant temp sensor, First the relay,go to the engine junction fuse and relay box there listed next to thethe ABS relay heater blower relay is the cooling fan relay, Now make a tool from the cooling fan relay, take the cover apart and expose the relay, when you collapse this relay the fan turns on stick in back in the socket key on engine off collapse the relay the fan should turn on if the fan doesnt turn on a fan is the solution if the fan turns on the coolant temp sensor will be the solution this sensor is located at the thermostat housing just follow the top radiator hose, you will see a sensor there
First check the fuse, then check to see if the coolant level in the radiator is low, then if you can check the cooling fan relay, and the cooling fan motor to make sure it is good,if all this checks out fine, then replace the coolant sensor, and bleed the cooling system of all the air in it.
CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY.IF BOTH GOOD SCAN CAR TO CHECK COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULT CODE.THE PCM AND COOLANT TEMP. SENSOR IS WHAT CAUSE FAN TO RUN AT CERTAIN TEMPERATURE.IF ALL IS GOOD.HOT WIRE COOLING FAN USING JUMPER WIRES TO BATTERY.IF FAN DONT RUN REPLACE FAN MOTOR.IF FAN RUNS YOU HAVE SHORT OR BROKE WIRE IN THE COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.
since you have already tested fan and relay and both work, the problem may be the engine temp sensor. There are two sensors. One goes to instument cluster. This is engine coolant temp sensor, the other is engine temp sensor which is usually attached to engine block, sometimes they are connected to thermostat housing with the coolant sensor. You can pully the engine temp sensor and test that sensor same way as relay. (with mulitimeter)
First check to see if the cooling fans on the radiator are working, You should be able to hear them from outside the car. Try turning on the a/c that should automatically make them come on. If they do not then you have a power loss to them. Check the relay under the hood by taking a small jumper wire and touching the terminals inside the plug going to the relay. If the fans run then the relay is bad. If they dont then it is possable that the cooling sensor is bad. Good luck. dont forget to rate.
