Question about 1998 GMC Sonoma

3 Answers

98 Sonoma A/C and blower works fine; when turned to heat it blows but the heat is intermittant, air will come out hot then cool down. What type of problem do I have and can this repair be done at home. Is it a thermostat maybe?

Check antifreeze level, if it's ok then it could be a problem with heater core

A thermostat is a good start because it sounds like the heater core does not have sufficient flow of coolant through it, that also indicates the heater core is plugged but a thermostat is definitely the quickest and cheapest start.

Thermostate has been relaced and the heater core blowen out. After that I can heat for 10-15 minutes then cold again?

  • gmtech2010 Mar 13, 2011

It sounds like air could be getting into the system and into the heater core. As air flows over the fins it cools down too quick if there is air inside and therefore there is no longer heat transfer. That shows that either there is a leak and air is getting pulled into the system or the air hasn't fully purged out. If it is a V6, the intake manifold gaskets are common to leak usually at the back or front. In general when it gets cold after a few mins and air is in the system with no external leaks it could indicate an internal head gasket failure. To check that you would need a combustion gas tester. It is basically a dye that changes colour if combustion gas is detected in the coolant.

The control for the AC/Heater door isn't working. To have AC the door has to close so that the hot air is not being blown into the car. When this door is closed it allows the cool air to pass through. This is either controled by vacuum or a ele. switch

Heater temp on mercury '98 mountaineer only blows hot

Everything that is heat and cooling in a vehicle is controlled by vacuum from the engine. It appears to me that your blend door vacuum line to the temp control switch is either off or cracked/broken and not making things work the way you want/expect. It's the vacuum friend.

Get a female garden hose adapter from the local hardware store. Disconnect the heater hose from behind the fan pulley and attach the hose connection. Disconnect the other heater hose behind the alternator, aim it towards the ground and flush water through the heater core. This worked on my truck.

Sounds like you are either low on coolant, or a head gasket failure.
