My Smart Fortwo Passion is a little over 2 yrs old (bought used), and I took it in for an oil change and tire pressure check a few weeks ago. Just last week the wrench icon started coming on when I first start the car. While the wrench light is on my odometer numbers are replaced by a negative number, which changes every day. First it said -1, then -2, so on, and now says -4. Then the wrench light goes away and my odometer reading comes back, which is currently a little over 57K. Also, possibly related, I wanted the car shop to look at the AC unit, since the air blows but does not cool anymore, and they didn't know where to start, since they had never worked on a Smart car before. It took them an hour and a half just to get the right parts to complete the oil change (they had to order the synthetic oil and the oil filter from their warehouse or another shop location). Could the wrench light be due to some reset that was not done after the oil change, or is it that I need to take it in for AC repairs?

You can not open the panel it self. to top the windscreen washer , face the car and you will see 2 small grills under the windscreen , remove the one to the left , you can see a small plastic bolt in the middle of it , just turn it half a turn and remove the small grill , look inside you will see the windscreen water canister , remove cap and fill with water , close cap , put the grill back , lock with the bolt , and you are done. good luck

SOURCE: Check engine light on for sometime; Response to throttle sluggish

If your catalytic converter is "below efficiency" or otherwise clogged, you will lose power as you drive and the vehicle heats. The more you drive the vehicle, the worse the problem will become. The exhaust can't escape properly through the catalytic converter, therefore your engine won't run properly. Your issues are related, and if you replace your catalytic converter they should go away.

SOURCE: wrench light is on and odometer shows negative mileage

The negative number means the car should have had it's oil changed that many miles ago. Oil life starts at 100% for new oil & counts down every 10%. At 15% the display will always show, which means it's near time to change the oil.

usersteve83, your oil may have been changed but the timer not reset. Reset the timer as shown...
1. Turn ignition to the "ON" position. (do not start engine)
2. Press SEL/RESET repeatedly until the oil life indicator is displayed.
3. Press & hold the SEL/RESET for about 10 seconds until it blinks then let go of the button.
4. Press the SEL/RESET again for about 5 seconds or until the oil life indicator resets to 100%.

Wrench = Maintenance Minder: Symbol letter & number...
Symbol A - Relace engine oil.
Symbol B - Replace engine oil & filter, Inspect front & rear brakes, Check parking brake adjustment, Visually inpest the tie rods, suspension components, driveshaft boots, brake hoses & line (including ABS), all fluid levels & their conditions, exhaust system, fuel lines & connections.
Symbol 1 - Rotate tires.
Symbol 2 - Replace air cleaner element (dusty conditions every 15K miles) & replace dust & pollen filter (behind glovebox) every 15K miles if mainly dusty or city driving.
Symbol 3 - Replace transmission fluid.
Symbol 4 - Replace spark plugs.
Symbol 5 - Replace engine coolant.

All above are taken from the 2006 Civic EX owner's manual.

SOURCE: Check Engine Light - 2000 Honda Accord

it could be that the air filter housing is worn and thats why they said you needed a new one what that means is that you are getting to much air into the engine and will cause check engine light to come on i would replace that and then see if it goes off and then if not go to a auto zone and they check the light and see what it is and then go from there

In a left turn without brakes or throttle, traction control engages unnecessarily. This started after rear tire change. 2yr old smart car with 25k miles.

Check your tires pressure. They need to be the same pressure. Also, if you bought a used tire with significant tread depth difference than the other tires, that could be causing the problem.

Hi, I have a 2006 ford freestar, and a couple of weeks ago I took my van to ford to have my oil change(I always to go ford) and two weeks later my car i now not working. when trying to start it it read...

TPMS sensor stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Basically there is a pressure sensor in each wheel. It sends a signal to a computer and tells you if you have a low tire. This was probably not the dealerships fault as they usually check your tire pressure when they do a oil change. You should check your pressures and fill any tire that is low. They probably run at 32psi on your vehicle but you can check inside your drivers door on the sticker, that will tell you what they should be set to. If it is really low you might want to take it in and have it checked you may have picked up a nail or something along the way. Also that light will come on if a tire is too much over inflated. Good Luck

Car does not work live in usa and it is european shipped to usa

Be aware if you intend to service the smart car D.I.Y the sump does NOT have a drain plug. That's right the sump pan is a sealed unit and the only way to extract the motor oil is by litterally sucking the oil out via the dipstick tube. Silly idea really. Try www.Amazon.com It's an internet book site and has a wide range of Self Service car manuals. Steve in the uk

Smart Car has Readout of 3 horizontal lines with gear selection

Hi there I just had a similar thing happen to me drove up the motorway and just as I came off at WSM I couldn't find any gear. The dredid 3 lines came up on the dash and a grinding noise from the back. I had to get the rescue service to take me back down to cornwall and dropped it at the garage. Just got it back the garage said they could not find the problem but they flushed the oil and fluids and bobs your uncle. Only time will tell if its ok but they did say sometimes the gears can stick and it just needs cleaning through. Is this true I don't know but all seems good now just makes me wonder it can happen again. It's got full service and was serviced last 2 months ago 53 passion. I did hear and read its common for the selector to go but I don't know anyone else with a smart car to ask. Anyway that's my woes I hope this anyone in a similar situation.
