The rheostat is the little dial on the dashboard that alters the brightness of the dash lights. It isn't under the hood. If your turn it all the way down until it clicks, it will turn off the lights. It will be in your manual.
What you are looking for is the BRAKE SWITCH on the REAR of the BRAKE PEDAL. IT more than likely came off (happens more than you think) or the switch went bad.. It is an EASY FIX
you can take it to any autozone or advanced auto to get the light scanned but before you purchase whatever sensor they tell you to get, find a good mechanic that can give a second opinion. Often a sensor can be thrown off by another faulty sensor that may not come up during scan.
I had the same problem. The fuse for the accessory plugs are not in the fuse box above the drivers feet it is in the group of fuses just above it. The owners manual describes it as location #16. It is a 15v fuse.
in my 98 montero sport the horn relay is next to the power steering resivour. As you look at the engine far left side a little black square. Just changed mine cause it went out
i don't know about the temp gauge,but i have a 2000 montero sport,and when my brake light and battery light came on,my alternator was going out.another sign for the alternator is the radio going off every once in a while,and then coming back on.
