It has to do with your Pat's key for your program key that went with the old steering column there is a copper ring or like a wire type ring that went around the key cylinder on your old column I think you needed to switch that to the new column not just the key cylinder but the little plastic ring with a wire hook to it that goes around the key cylinder this will match your old key
old post.

97 geo tracker is not equipped with power steering. they where made so light that they just have steering assist which doesn't require power steering fluid or anything else. you will notice that when vehicle is parked or at slow speeds steering wheel is hard to turn. this is perfectly normal its just not power steering.
No.first off remove horn pad in centre of steering wheel and remove steering wheel Do Not hit steering shaft to remove, use puller or wiggle it off.Remove the bottom steering wheel cowl/shroud below steering wheel.Lower the steering column by removing the two torx head bolts located under the dash.Remove the two upper and lower screws that hold the switch to the column.Unplug switch and assembly is reverse of disassembly.Good luck let me know if you need more help
THERE IS A SWITCH UNDERNEATH THE STEERING COLUMN THAT WILL CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. I BOUGHT MY 1994 GEO TRACKER 4X4 BRAND NEW. IT TOOK ME SEVERAL SERVICE APPOINTMENTS FROM MY DEALER BEFORE I GOT THIS INFORMATION FROM MY MECHANIC.
