My 1997 awd explorer 5.0 made a funny grinding (?) noise when i turned the wheel, it seemed to be rubbing and almost hopping instead of a smooth turn (it happened with both sharp and gentle/wide turns). i removed the front driveshaft and that seemed to fix the problem, but now i am wondering if i will damage the vehicle if i drive it without the shaft. is there anything else i should be looking for? HELP!
the u-joints are all right, but the shaft itself has play in it. maybe i should just put a new shaft in it, and see how it works? if you can think of anything else, let me know. and thank you for your quick response :)the u-joints are all right, but the shaft itself has play in it. maybe i should just put a new shaft in it, and see how it works? if you can think of anything else, let me know. and thank you for your quick response :)

Sounds like you have a bad wheel bearing. These cars are known for that. It could also be a bad CV joint [axle] , but it won't usually make your wheel hop. Jack car up and try to move wheel top to bottom. There should be no play at all. Try spinning the wheel while it is off the ground, if it's a bearing, you will hear a grinding noise. If it's a bad CV joint, you will hear a clicking. Let me know if this was helpful to you, and until you get it looked at, I wouldn't drive it, as the wheel can fall right off if it's a bearing. Good luck
I had some issues with my 2005 explorer left rear. It was making a creepy old door sound at low speeds and then a high pitched whisel at high speeds. That turned out to be a broken wheel bearing and had it replaced. Note each wheel has two wheel bearings. After that a new noise developed that sounded like metal scraping/ grinding metal. It end up being the brake dust cover got bent when they replaced the bearing and it was rubbing something, the fix for that was bending it so it didn't rub. I hope this helps.
i recommend that you check your brakes 1st try to determine whether the grind you hear is from front or rear or maybe under the center of your vehicle. you may have a bad universal joint also, does it pop or crack at all when you shift out of park on a hill? or when you turn ono way or another on a hill? if none of these i suggest you consult your mechanic for further evaluation. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com
Could be low on oil, trans doesnt have fluid, wheel bearings are gone, or could be something stuck under the vehicle and either the tires or the drive axle is rubbing against it.
I ran into this problem, and discovered that i had a faulty front shaft speed sensor. The grinding I had was that the transfer case clutch packs were trying to lock up and engage the front wheel drive. Replacesment of the sensor has not fully rectified the situation though, as it still does it intermittently. It seems to do it at low speed turns and on acceleration. Not sure if this is your problem or not, but it could be. A scan of the computer can tell you if it is the issue though.
did you change any tires? if the circumference of the tires are more than 1 inch difference from each this will cause the 4wd to try to engage because it sees a difference in wheel speed
is your universal joints out and that is where its rubbing?
running different size tires on a all wheel drive is a big mistake it can burn out the transfercase
