My clutch pedal used to be pretty stout and the clutch would engage at about the midway point to the floor. All of a sudden the clutch pedal is pretty free to the floor where the clutch now engages. what could have caused this?

If light pressure on your clutch pedal causes it to fall or easily be pushed to the floor and you cannot feel a normal point in which the clutch should engage it is quite possibly the slave cylinder. Most mechanic shops will tell you to replace the clutch and while doing the service they will replace the slave cylinder. Do you see or smell any brake fluid leaking? Brake fluid is used in the clutch hydraulic system. So if your brake fluid is low or you can see it leaking or smell it burning this would Point towards slave cylinder. There are other ways to check if your slave cylinder is working appropriately by looking under the vehicle having the clutch pedal pushed and seeing if the cylinder is engaging the transmission and then feeling for resistance.

you meant dis-engage im sure.
pedal up is engaged,
pedal at floor dis-engages it.
my guess, is the clutch drags unless i push the clutch pedal 100%
to the floor.
1: bad cable is 90% cause. non last this long.
2: no free play is way too loose.
3: broken lever on the pedal top. caused by #1

you should buy a self adjusting clutch, you can set the clutch yourself, to catch right away,or, a couple of inches of play, It could also be your clutchplate, not cheap! I hope this helps you in some way

I would try adjusting the clutch master such that the point of engagement at the pedal, is further from the floor. This will effectively increase the travel of the clutch slave and possibly solve your problem. The clutch master pushrod should have an adjustment behind the pivot at the pedal bracket. Usually a lock nut has to be loosened off a little and then the rod screwed out of it's holder to effectively lengthen it.

Ok, Clutch engagement point should be midway or just before midway in relation to total travel.(pretty much the same in any clutch vehicle) assuming that if put in lets say 1st gear, with clutch in,then engine started, when clutch is released, car does not move but there are no unusual noises (grinding from inside trans.) If this is the case, I'd first check linkage for adjustment. If OK, remove the trans and look inside for broken gears, excessive metal debris etc.If shift rails are internal it could be that shift forks are sliding on rails and failing to engage synchros.

its the clutch master and slave unit..... u can get them in a pair with the line all ready bled

I found that having a wood stick on the clutch pedal down to the floor all night (the other end of the stick held by the seat. oh yeah !!! ) would help to ease shifting for the first hour the next morning, then it would come back stiff and hard to engage in gear.

Could be the clutch is wearing down.If it's in ALL gears,it is likely the clutch.If i remember correctly,your car has a hydraulically activated clutch.If this is the case,under the dash,where the clutch pedal attaches to the clutch master cylinder,there is a jam nut,either 12mm or 14 mm wrench,loosen the jamnut,and spin the threded rod in,towards the clutch pedal,and away from the firewall.This should make your clutch pedal engagement point closer to the floor,and easier to shift.
