Auto repair shops in Illinos

Is there some sort of law that requires auto repair shops to list the customer's reason for bringing their car in for repair, in Illinois.

The shop I was using never gave me a copy that listed the reason why my car was brought to their shop to be looked at & repaired. Plus, I was never given an estimate sheet, just the final bill with a general outline on what was done.

Help, please.

Hi Linda - As far I know , and I live in Illinois, there is no law requiring repair shops to write down what you brought the car in for. You should request it and if they ask why they may not reputable or if you trust them you can just tell them you need all the info for tax purposes. You can always ask for a written estimate. Some shops will tell you though that no matter the estimate, depending on the job, it all depends on what they find "once they get started". You can always tell them let me know what you find and then nail them down on a price. It sounds like you don't know whether to trust these guys or not. No offense meant, but if these guys aren't trustworthy they really like to see a woman bring a car in in. Finding a good mechanic is as hard as finding a doctor. A reputable mechanic will list the parts used, labor charges and even show you the bad parts if you want. You can even request that they save them and give them to you depending what they are. It's not likely but if you tell me the area where you live I night be able to give you the name of a good mechanic. Also if you want, tell me why you took you're car in and what he supposedly fixed and what he charged you and I'll let you know if it was a fair amount. Go see illinois attorney general LISA MADIGAN at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov look under automotive repair act they supposed to give you a writted estimate of repair anything over 100$ hope it what you whant and a fixya for me thank you pierre

take it to your local auto parts store they will check the error messages from the computer for free and might be able to help you find the part you need... If not bring it to a repair shop.. Could have a bad spark plug or bad injector etc to many things to list.

Ever wonder what separates a good technician from an average technician?

Can't figure out why after replacing an electrical component that you were sold from a part store because they plugged in their computer and told you the part needed to be replaced?

Then take a look at this "problem" and tell me if you can find its location?

Customer had a code P0303
One shop replaced the injector
Another shop replaced the PCM
A third shop wanted to replace the PCM a 2nd time

I took my HS auto students and made them follow my instructions to find this "little" problems

They made the repair and the customer left happy and in disbelief that a HS student could find this little wire among the miles of wires on a car!

Trust me...If you want to fix it i can tell you how, you just have to be willing to spend some time and listen!

I have changed battery twice and alternator once. Is there a reason why a toyota sienna 2001 xle should not maintain optimum/adequate charging with full gadget load at baseline idling of 650rpm?
the Toyota's have a huge load on the charging systems, when you replace the alternator never use cheap parts NO auto-zone, or advanced get a top of the line replacement part cheap will not last on the Toyota, spend a little more and fix the problem, go to NAPA or Carquest and only buy the top line, trust me this is 25 years of experience speaking. after 5 bad alternators's in a row from auto-zone i will not not let them back in my shop if a customer brings in there own part from auto-zone we send them to the shop down the road we will not even install there own part.

My car rattles and smokes under where the catalytic converter is.also it doesn't have much power.but it starts up fine.but when you press on the gas it act like its got hardly any power.
Sounds as though the catalytic converter is getting extremely hot. Take it to a good muffler repair shop and have them install a Universal type converter. Be sure to keep the old converter Don't let the repair shop keep it. It could be worth enough money at a scrap metal facility to pay for the new one. I have head of some muffler shops telling the customers that the law requires them to keep the old converters. There is no such law. It's yours.

What kind of freon do I need for my 1998 Grand Jeep Cherokee?
If you are planning on recharging your system, you are required to use R134a. It's not factory freon but unless you plan on taking it into the shop, you won't be able to get it. You must posess a license to deal with the other stuff and quite honestly it is against the law to discharge the freon that is currently in your vehicle. (Not saying that it can't be done) When you go to do your re-charge, you will more than likely need a can of cooling system oil and most definately a pressure gauge. All things necessary to do an 'at home' re-charge can be found at your nearest auto store like Advance Auto, Auto-Zone, Napa, Origional Equipment etc.

Yes, But to be sure bring it to an auto parts chain like Auto-zone, they will pull the codes from your computer and give you a list of what might be wrong. and they include a parts list!!

2003 Audi A4 1.8T Check Engine light on
The CEL means there is a Diagnostic Fault Code stored in the Engine Control Unit. There are 1000's of DTC's, so you will need to have it read by a Code Reader. Auto Parts stores like Auto Zone, Pep Boys, perhaps even Advanced Auto often will read the code for you; but by law they cannot clear the codes. Many codes do not cause drivability problems, severe ones will trigger the ECU to run in a Limp Mode, which would require repair work before any trip longer than a few miles. Hope this is helpful.
