My speedometer and tachometer stopped working. The tach appears to be dead, but the speedometer needle vibrates like it is trying to engage. Intermittently, both gauges will work, but as soon as I turn off the car and turn it back on, they will not be working again. Any idea what the problem is and how I can solve it?
There are rechargeable aa batteries that wear out over few years and have to be replaced behind the tach on some cars.. I just did it on a BMW and the tach started waorking again as well as the gas mileage indicatoor gauge
I have the same problem with my 96 Identical did you ever find a solution?

Usually answered in minutes!
On my daughters the instruments work only about one in five starts and turning the engine off and restarting does not help. Only if you shut the ignition off for at least 20 min is there a chance they might work again. Is there a relay for the instrument panel ? Could it be a ground wire ?
If anyone has resolved this problem please post it.
Thank you
I have the same exact problem with my 2000 Cabrio - it started right after getting the battery replaced.
I have this exactly to a tee. The Speedometer vibrates and the tachometer doesnt register.
What was the fix for this.
Sorry if during the chat session we could not help you much but it's hard to find a solution just like that as we expert will try hard to facilitate the process of fault finding but some problems can't be solved over the net and they need special diagnosis equip. Hope you understand that.Cheers
