Air Conditioner works fine early in the morning or in the evening. During the day, when you press the AC button, it will not engage the compressor or condensor fan. Jumpering out the relays when it is failed makes the fan or compressor work. No fuses are gone. Switch seems ok and temp control too. As i say... it works any time its cool.

I am trying to find the relay for the fan switch. My ac works great on switch 4, but doesn't want to work on 1-3. My mechanic told me it is direct on 4, guess cause that it pulls the most amps there, but I'm looking for the location of the relay under the dash and the EASIEST way to get there....like there is a easy way to get under the dash of a Honda....97 accord ex

    thanks and GO HOGS

Sounds like your pressure switch is bad.as the temp outside gets hotter the more pressure is built up in your ac so when the pressure gets to high the pressure switch shuts down the system to prevent damage to it.Did u put any more r-134a in to the system if so then the pressure will be to high and the switch is doing as it is supposed to.Thanks for using fixya

Air conditioner blows hot but freon is full

Your compressor could be faulty. Check to see if it engages when you press the AC button with the car running.

2008 Town and Country air conditioning problem. my air conditioner works great (good and cold) both mornings and evenings when the outside air temperature is under approx. 80 degrees. Problem is - during...

when an ac unit that is working well in the cooler parts of the day but fails when it is hot , it is indicated that there is excessive gas in the system
ac gas is not added by the can but by reading the pressure on 2 gauges
one connected to the inlet side of the compressor and the other to the high pressure side of the compressor ( there are forums where gas has been added by the can that has resulted in hose failure and compressor damage)
it works like this ac liquid gas is released in to a low pressure area in the evaporator ( under the dash) and the heat of the car boils the liquid off. That makes the air cold
the gas is then sucked in by the compressor and converted back to a liquid in the condensor in front of the radiator
there the heat from the compression of the gas is removed by the condenser fan and the liquid is then sent back to the evaporator
If you have excessive gas in the system it cannot be compressed back to a liquid (too much heat in the gas to transfer to the air)and so the high pressure side safety switch turns the compressor off to prevent damage
hence no cooling in the hottest part of the day
as to you statement about the amount of water on the road
If the humidity is 14-20 % there is very little water vapor in the air for the evaporator to remove and so there will be little water separated from the air in the car
AC units cool the air in a car by removing the water vapor (humidity) from the air in the car ( humidity is what makes you sweat and feel uncomfortable as you will know when it is 80% or higher )
using an a c along with the heater ( climate control) is the quickest to defog a windscreen
So have the ac tested for correct pressure by a professional accredited ac shop

I have a 03 honda civicand the air conditioner wont work? it doesnt need recharged and the light comes on when i push the button but i get no cold air? any ideas?

I have the same problem right now, and from what I can figure, it looks like an intermittent thermal protector switch on top of the AC compressor. My 2003 Civic air conditioning works fine for 20 minutes or so and then stops working. If this switch is faulty, the compressor clutch won't engage and you won`t get cold air. I will get it replaced soon, but it seems like the access is not easy.

The heater works great but the air conditioner won't work at all

Check these items to narrow down the issue. HVAC in cars works on two different systems.

Air conditioning checks you can look at are

1) With engine running, turn on your AC on high as cold as it goes. Under the hood, listen for a clicking sound from the compressor. It should click on and off as the belt goes around the compressor every 15-30 seconds, or sometimes shorter or longer. IF this is working, then, the compressor is likely okay. However if not, then the compressor will need to be replaced.

2) IF the compressor is working, then it is either a low freon in the system issue or a leak in the lines in the system. This typically can be checked quite easily depending on the AC symptoms prior to the AC not working. If the AC worked, but slowly has not been working, or it works for a few seconds early in morning, and then stops...it's a low freon issue. The only way to check to see if it is leaking is to do some diagnostics by going to your local auto parts store and retrieving the proper freon for the vehicle as well as a freon filling tool. Shouldn't be too expensive. Follow the instructions on the can, and put one to two cans of freon in the system. The AC should work nearly instantly. If it goes back to hot within a day or two, then the lines/seals are probably worn or broken and it is leaking. The best option you can take after this, is to a certified AC repair shop as it will much easier and less frustrating for the home mechanic.

Hope this helps!

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air

I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Good luck

1998 Crown Victoria air conditioner

Fuse 9, 50A under hood, Fuse 5 15A Instrument panel. If they're ok, make sure the compressor clutch can be turned by hand (engine off, obviously). If not replace the compressor. Most common problem is the cycle switch. That should be the electrical connector on top of the accumulator. Just jump that by backprobing the connector on both sides with a pinand connect them, with the car on and a/c on if the compressor clutch engages, replace the switch. If it doesn't, try wiggling wire harness and watch it, if it engages, find a broken wire and repair it.

Car full of freon, air conditioner still not cooling

Yes the system can be full of freon and yet not work, the pressure switch could faulty, the expansion valve too could be faulty, he drier receiver too.
On switching 'on' the AC , is the AC compressor workingor rather does it engage?
The AC compressor clutch too could be not functioning.
I guess you have to go step by step to check first if the AC compressor does rotate on switching 'on' the AC.
