Is there an easy way to turn the pulleys so that the hole in the pulley lines up with the bolt and we can get to it?

  • Candyse Hart
    Candyse Hart Nov 07, 2013

I mean the P/S Pump pulley.

You can use a ratchet and socket to turn the crankshaft bolt. This will turn all the pulleys. Also, you may be able to remove the belt without loosening bolt A, unless it is really tight.

I just changed a freinds alt. on her 2001 spectra.. if i remember correctly i loosened 3 bolts up on the top pulley ( ps pump) i even had to get creative and put my socket thru the hole on the ps pump belt wheel. That was the third bolt. and that knocked it loose.

Alternator was fairly easy to swivel around .. loosened 2 or 3 bolts and it swiveled easily. So i loosened 5 or 6 bolts total. and they were NOT easy to get loose.

How do I locate the tensioner for the alternator belt on a 2003 kia spectra?

I wondered the same thing and looked for days on end. To my surprise, there is no tension pulley for the 2003 Kia Spectra. The Kia 4 cyl has two (2) belts. The outside belt services the power steering and air conditioning. The inside belt (the one you want to service) services the alternator and water pump. The alternator tension is set by two (2) adjustment screws located on the alternator. One screw is used as a locking bolt and the upper bolt is used as the adjuster. You must first loosen the locking bolt which is located between the belt and the alternator housing. Loosen about 6 to 8 travels of the wrench (size 13mm), then tighten the upper bolt until you have no more than 1/2 inch of movement in the belt when you press down. After the correct tension is achieved, tighten the locking bolt and your done. As long as you're down there, you might as well check the outer belt as well. Same principle, one locking and one adjuster. Good Luck, Fred

How to change alternator belt

Hi there,

Lift the car hood and disconnect the ground cable from the battery´s negative terminal. In the engine compartment, locate the alternator. On top of the alternator you will see a pivot bolt. Use a socket wrench to loosen this bolt, but do not remove it completely.

Locate the alternator belt and loosen it from its pulleys by applying pressure to the alternator and moving it in the direction of the engine. Once the alternator belt is loosened, pull it off from its pulleys.

Install the new alternator belt. It must run around the alternator pulley, the water pump pulley and the alternator pulley. With the new alternator belt in place, adjust it over the pulleys by bringing the alternator back to its original position, away from the engine. Make sure the belt is tight around the pulleys, then tighten the pivot bolt on top of the alternator.

Re-attach the ground cable to the battery and close the car hood.

Hope this helps...

How do replace the alternator belt on a kia 2002 sportage

There is a log bolt that needs to be loosened, but the bolt on the back ,top of the alternator has to be loosened first, then turn the long adjusting bolt counter clock wise,to loosen the alternator to get the belt off, after loosening the long bolt you can pull on the belt itself, and this will pull the alternator towards the engine, then you can remove the bolt.

I need to find out how to remove the alternator from my 2002 Kia Spectra

The steps to replace an alternator are:
  1. Do the following through the passenger side of the engine bay of course with the hood up.
  2. First and most important is to disconnect the negative connection to the battery (driver side).
  3. Using a 12mm socket loosen the tension adjusting screw and bracket screw. Using a 10mm socket or open end remove wirings. Pinched other connector to remove.
  4. Using 14mm socket with 3/8 drive ratchet remove the big bolt on the lower side of the alternator.
  5. You might need some help from a pipe for extra leverage.
  6. Remove all parts that will hinder the removal of the alternator. For example the charcoal cannister on the firewall just slide up.
  7. Ease the alternator through the opening by turning the alternator untile it can pass through the opening.

Replacing the alternator belt on 2001 kia spectra

Then you don't take anything off. There will be a spring loaded idler that tensions the serpentine belt. Take a socket or long 12 point wrench and attach to the center bolt of the tensioner, then rotate the idler wheel away from the belt, take the belt off. Slowly release the spring tension of the idler.
The 2nd belt should be set up the same way.
