Oh ... I was told that it may be a pulley also? Is this part of the alternator too?

Sounds like alternator belt burned and broke.

Thanks so much, but does that mean the whole alternator needs to be replaced or just the belt?

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2011

It could be possibly both. I'd pull alternator off and have it tested FREE at any good parts store (that'll save from having to do the work twice) U'm sure belt is "toast" but Alt tested so you don't smoke new belt.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions! :-)

    Not a problem... good luck!

    Pulley is part of alternator.

The 2003 neon alternator is actually controlled by the PCM, so swapping alternator is not possible, you have to add on an alternator and dedicate it to your stereo, I'm researching the same thing, I'll post my solution to this when I figure it out myself!

I have a 2003 dodge neon sxt and i can locate the alternator but i dont see how to take if off please help

To remove the alternator you will need to raise the front of the car and block the rear wheels. Disconnect the negetive wire from the battery. Loosen the upper alternator adjustment boltnut. Remove the right front tire and the accessory drivebelt splash shield. Loosen the alternator lower mounting bolt. Remove the alternator drive belt and disconnect the electrical connectors from the alternator. Remove the upper and lower adjustment bolts and remove alternator. You will have to remove the alternator bracket when you lower the alternator down. Installation is the reverse of removal. Hope this will help you.

Ok here is a simple question, has any one checked the battery connections? if not do so, remove the Battery ends and use a wire brush to clean the battery lugs and cable ends, if every thing is corroded use a mix of baking soda and water to remove the corrosion, while you are at it make sure the other near by connections are good, I hope this helps
