I have a 2004 f150 with a 5.4 that bogs down around 2500 rpm and doesn't smooth back out until it gets just above 3000. Any tips on what is causing this?

I've seen two concerns that will definitely cause this concern. The first suggestion would be to replace the spark plugs if the vehicle has 50k or more miles. Ford originally stated that the original plugs would last 100k. It was later suggested that they be replaced at 60k. I've fixed several trucks by simply (or not so simply) replacing the spark plugs. Use caution, the plugs may break when removing. A symptom of this concern is as you stated but also on wide open throttle applications. the vehicle will bog down and sputter, then finally smooth out. A spark plug concern will typically not throw code because the computer monitors changes in rpm and is relative. If all cylinders aren't firing correctly, the computer doesn't know any different and does not store a code. Also, depending on the mileage, check the fuel filter.

The second concern could be the intake manifold runner control. This is used to modify torque and is located inside of the intake manifold.

Good luck, if you can't leave four thumbs up, please ask for more information. Have a great day!

Check engine light on. Will not rev up over 2500 rpm. Fluctuates between 2000 and 2500 rpm and runs rough. Upon first start, you can rev fine and it runs smooth as long as you hold the rpms over 3000. ...

Hi, there are a lot of things that could cause this behavior, so it would help us to diagnose your problem if you could get a scan of the OBD2 connector and send us the trouble code. If you live in the US you can usually get a free scan at your local parts chain.
