You are going to need to replace the ignition switch
Follow procedure for replacing ignition switch. If switch is just loose, tighten.

Here is the procedure for disarming the airbag, which is a good idea:
2000-02 ModelsTurn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK , remove the key, then disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the AIR BAG or SIR fuse from the fuse block.
Remove the steering column filler panel or knee bolster.
Unplug the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and yellow two way connector at the base of the steering column.
Open the glove compartment door, lift the stop and let the door fully open.
Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the passenger yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.
Unplug the yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.
Connect the negative battery cable.

I found the below pic that may hael a little. I will look for some better ones though. Hopefully you can see what is wrong when you get the covers off the column. If you aren't sure what is wrong, please do get back to me and maybe send a picture of what you are looking at, if possible.
If your column looks like the one below, the switch is right behind the key barrel and is likely the source of the problem. If you take the switch out, try to turn it thru the various positions. If it turns freely, you can test it. The problem may also be with the steering wheel locking linkage. I forgot to ask you if the steering wheel locks. If not, the linkage may be the problem. With the switch removed, see if you can manipulate the linkage to lock the steering wheel--this will show you if there is an issue with the locking linkage.

Thanks for the assistance with the 2000 GMC Jimmy ignition/key problem. The procedure & illustrations give me amuch better idea of whats wrong & how to fix it. I got a buddy who knows about auto repairs to give me a hand this coming week . Hopefully we'll get it fixed.
