When it dropped to empty did it run out of gas or were you able to get to a gas station and put gas in,if so did the gauge read above empty.its possible that the float in the tank or the needle on the dash momentarily stuck for what ever reason and it may not happen again.

Its possible the sending unit in the tank is stuck and your gas tank is actually empty.
Or there is junk floating in the bottom of the tank and the pump is now clogged up.
Have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge ?

Fuel gauge reads empty but has full tank of gas when i hosed off top of gas tank gauge started working then went out a few minutes later. there has to be a loose wire but i can't find it.

May be a bad sending unit from the fuel tank.
You'll need a mechanic to tell you if that's the problem or something simple like a loose or broken wire.

Check gauges light

Possible bad guage, bad wiring, or bad sending unit. Check each one independently of each other, start with wiring first, then sending unit.
