That should not matter at all if it is operating properly, you need to read the voltage at the back of the alternator and at the battery-running voltage should be 14.2 volts (approx), in both locations. I suspect the alternator is either not hooked up properly (check connections) or a fuse is blown.
The regulator built into the alternator should actually limit the current and voltage going to the battery. Try driving with you lights on and see if the light goes out. Then, with the lights off, put a volt meter across the battery and check what voltage is going to the battery. If it is over 14,5v the alternator is overcharging and I think you should take it back for their attention.
