98 Mercury Mystique. The transmission shifts from 1st to 3rd and will not go into overdrive. This is the second transmission with exactly the same problem. I had a junkyard transmission put in the car 75 days ago. The newer transmission was working fine, shifting through all the gears till yesterday when this condition started while I was driving. There was no particular warning, although the car started stuttering several weeks ago. The stutter feels more like an engine problem and I don't think is related to the transmission. The Overdrive off light is flashing continuely since this started as well.

SOURCE: NO OVERDRIVE

I had a similar problem with my 98 mystique when i bought it used. I had no overdrive and was lucky to find a honest transmission shop that found the problem. In my case the overdrive was unplugged. They plugged it back in,cleared the computer and changed my tranny fluid and i was good to go. You should be revving about 2400rpm at 65mph. The other thing you can check is to make sure that the wires that go from the overdrive button are not broken off or coroded.

SOURCE: Transmission hesitates shifting into second and perhaps third gear when driving slow. When acceleration is positive transmission shifts smoothly. Reference "99 Mercury Transmission" as Subject when

Several things could be causing your problem:

  1. Auto transmission fluid is low
  2. Auto transmission fluid needs changing; this is an area that gets neglected by a lot of people;check the fluid and if its brown or gives off a burning smell, it needs changing. Very old transmission fluid will cause slipping in the transmission; if this is the case, it should be changed along with the filter
Hope you find that this answers your question. Best of luck.
Greg

p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles

SOURCE: 1997 mercury sable won't shift into overdrive

first of all, check the kickdown cable to transmission. it may be out of adjustment. or just bad.if its the cable out of adjustment, it is sure cheaper then a tranny.

My 98 mercury mystique is missing 3rd gear it goes 1st and 2nd fine but wont go over 30mph and no matter how high the rpm go it wont turn over into 3rd gear Help

The likely problem is the VSS or vehicle speed sensor. The transmission uses the speed from the speed sensor to determine the shift points. You should have the check engine light on it will probably show a code for the speed sensor. Hope this helps!

You need to replace either the vehicle speed sensor depending on your mountaineer it could have two, or transmission ranger sensor.

4l60e going from 1st to 3rd and dont have overdrive any more

You most likely have a broken sunshell inside the transmission. They tend to go out when the transmission is shifted to drive when while still rolling in reverse.
