I have a 1997 Ford Taurus that is reading a code P0761. I've been ignoring the light b/c it kept coming on and off. This last tank of gas I got 80 miles less to my tank.. Is this something easy to fix (for someone who's done car work) or is this a complete transmission rebuild issue? Any suggestions?
The reason your gas milage went down is because you are not going into 4th gear or overdrive the most likely problem is shift solenoid 3 but it could be a wiring or pcm concern.I would test ss3 and go from there.Canging of SS3 is fairly involved and you would need a decent mechanical ability to perform this task.

Thank you Jim!
I have since had the transmission rebuilt, and that seems to have fixed it.. A little pricey! But worth it if It makes my car last me awhile longer :)
Thank you!

89 Ford Taurus LX 3.8, 91,000 miles, orig owner. Couple times went to get more gas, and when removed gas cap, some gas spirted out of my half-filled tank. Wondered what caused this to spit out of tank? Car had been driven about ten miles that day.
