It started without the distributor cap? That is impossible. I suspect you may have plug wires mixed up. Make sure it is wired as the diagram shows. Also replace the rotor.
Follow the spark plug wires from your distributor cap to your spark plugs. Be sure to replace one at a time so you get the firing order correct. And be sure and gap your new plugs before you install them. Might want to check your distributor cap and rotor while your at it. Be sure that you do not get the wires mixed up. You can number (or otherwise) mark them with a pen and some medical (white) tape to be sure you know where to put them back if you do change your distributor cap and rotor. Good luck. Back trace what you did. You may have unplugged something and forget to re-connect it. You mean the distributor cap,,,,, or the ENTIRE distributor???? If the later, then you must be 180 degrees off.

The firing order for a Chevy s10 depends on which engine you have.
1.9L engine the firing order is: 1-3-4-2 . Distributor rotates counterclockwise.
2.0L engine the firing order is: 1-3-4-2 . Distributor rotates clockwise.
2.5L engine the firing order is: 1-3-4-2 . Distributor rotates clockwise.
2.8L engine the firing order is: 1-2-3-4-5-6 . Distributor rotates clockwise.

If your car is equipped with a distributor, then yes, if that gasket is missing, then it would allow moisture to enter and cause your vehicle to stall, or run rather poorly. I would suggest changing your distributor cap and wires and this would correct the problem.
Just be sure to change one wire at a time from the old cap to the new cap, to the spark plug, You don't want to mix up where the wires belong this will cause you a headache you don't want.
Why your distributor could be blamed is because of the moisture causing rust, and rust won't allow electrical current flow, which a Spark ignited engine, relies on to ignite the fuel mixture in the cylinders.
When your facing the front of your bronco looking into engine compartment, on left hand side in
sequence is 1, 2, 3 front to back. on right hand side it's 4,5,6, front
to back. The distributor rotates clockwise. On the top of the distributor, is 1-4-2-5-3-6 starting at the little mark on the cap or TDC. Hope that helped.
