My speedometer stopped working 1998 dodge ram and the air bag light came on and stayed on. I replaced both speed sensors(back differential and transmission). Still not working and any ideas?

Hi ,the air bag light will need resetting ,have it reset by an auto shop who has a diagnostic machine to plug into it,some dont even charge for this service ,as for the speedo it could be a number of things that will need checking ,firstly fuses, then wiring leading from the speed sensor on the transmission up to the speedometer in the dash ,then have the speedometer removed and checked ,it has to be one of these ,THANK YOU FOR USING FIX YA

The sensor in the differential is for the ABS. Did you replace the sensor for the speedometer in the end of the transmission?

I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 4x4 that the speedometer don't untell it get to 60+ why is that and the brake light stays on but I think the light was on befor the speedometer stop working.

From what I have read this sounds like a problem with the second speed sensor located on back at the rear axel on top of the differential. If the cable is loose or the sensor is bad it will cause the brake light to come on and the speedometer to act funny. There are two speed sensors...one in the transmission and the one on the differential. The second one is probably the problem.

Hey guys, i have a 2003 dodge ram 1500. when i came home from iraq a couple days ago i started the truck and it runs great but, the ABS, AIR BAG, and PARKING BRAKE lights stay on. My speedometer quit...

Verify that the ABS wheel speed sensors in the wheel hubs are operating properly. They tell the vehicle individual wheel speeds, and can be just as important as the vehicle speed sensor. Also, verify that the individual wiring connections are properly connected, and inspect the wiring.

Had this exact problem in my shop yesterday. Turned out the connector on the speed sensor on the rear differential was broken allowing it to pull out of the sensor. Cleaned out inside the connectors and tied them together with a pull tie. Problem solved.

Abs light and brake light came on wont turn back off

There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. What caused mine to go bad was apperantly water got into the differential when launching and loading my boat. check to see if gear lube needs to be replaced also.
The answer above is perfectly correct. When the ABS sensor on the diff goes bad the speedo no longer will work, the odometer stops recording mileage and both brake and ABS light comes on. You also loose O/D or "Lock-up" in the torque converter. The sensor is inexpensive and can be changed in about 30 mins. Good Luck!
I second the second answer :) My ABS light was on, my BRAKE light was on, my CHECK ENGINE light was on, my SPEEDOMETER wouldn't work below 35 mph, then quit working alltogether. Once the speedomenter quit working the odometer and cruise control quit working. I replaced the rear differential mounted speed sensor ($33) and then reset the CHECK ENGINE light by disconnecting the positive battery cable for a couple of minutes. EVERYTHING then worked.
Replace rear differential speed sensor as follows:
a) remove parking brake cable bracket (1/2" socket)
b) remove speed sensor bolt (9/16" deep socket)
c) remove metal speed sensor cover
d) remove speed sensor from rear differential housing (use channel lock pliers, twist gently back and forth while applying upward pressure. Once the speed sensor has a small gap between it and the rear differential housing, insert a flat-blade screwdriver and gently apply upward pressure while gently twisting speed sensor back and forth.
e) disconnect speed sensor from speed sensor cable
f) lubricate new sensor with WD-40, insert into rear differential housing. It will NOT go in all the way by hand, so do NOT force it nor hit it with anything made out of metal.
g) replace metal speed sensor cover
h) Insert speed sensor bolt and tighten LIGHTLY until a small amout of pressure is felt. Tap speed sensor with rubber hammer until it pops into housing. Finish tightening of speed sensor bolt.
i) replace brake cable bracket, replace 1/2" nut and tighten
j) disconnect positive battery cable for 2 minutes, reconnect positive battery cable
h) start vehicle, enjoy,

Took off one morning and ABS light and brake stay on and truck want idel. But brakes work fine and truck runs good. Could this be a vacum line problem? If so where should I look.

Chances are the speed pickup on the differential is either faulty or drity. I had the same thing happen to my 1998 Dodge Ram 2500. In addition to your symptoms, my speedometer stopped working below 25 mph.
this

the part number at Autzone = SU3356 . That is for ABS on rear wheels only. It is a different part number if you have 4 wheel ABS.
this is how to test if it is bad:

TESTING (1997 Models)

Resistance
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2. Ensure the ignition key is in the OFF position.
  3. Disconnect the speed sensor electrical harness.
  4. Measure resistance between the terminals on the speed sensor
  5. Resistance should be 1000-2500 ohms.
  6. If resistance is not within specification, check the harness for continuity.
  7. If continuity exists, the sensor is faulty.

0900c152800c0d8a.jpg enlarge_icon.gifenlarge_tooltip.gif Fig. Measure and record the distance from the underside of the sensor flange to the end of the sensor pole piece
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2. Remove the sensor from the differential.
  3. Measure and record the distance from the underside of the sensor flange to the end of the sensor pole piece. This distance represents dimension "B". This dimension should be 1.07-1.08 in. (27.18-27.43mm). If dimension is not within specification, replace the speed sensor.
  4. Measure and record the distance between the sensor mounting surface of the differential case and the teeth at the top of the exciter ring. This distance represents dimension "A". This dimension should be 1.085-1.120 in. (27.56-28.45mm). If dimension is not within specification, replace the exciter ring.
  5. Subtract dimension "B" from dimension "A" to determine sensor air gap. The gap should be 0.005-0.050 in. (0.127-1.27mm).

Here is how to replace it:

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Remove the brake line mounting nut, if fitted, and remove the brake line from the sensor stud.
  3. Remove the mounting stud from the sensor and shield.
  4. Remove the sensor and shield from the differential housing.
  5. Disconnect the wire and remove the sensor.

To install:
  1. Connect the harness to the sensor. Be sure the seal is securely in place between the sensor and wiring connector.
  2. Install O-ring on sensor if removed.
  3. Install sensor on differential; housing, sensor shield, mounting stud. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4. Install the brake line on the sensor stud and install the nut.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
