If it is an under body lay down engine then best advice is to run away as they have big problems with pulling liners into the sump or breaking crankshafts. ( local council bus service had over 100 units and every winter 25% would need engine replacement) Vertical motors will be a 190 engine or possibly a Scammel or AEC engine If it is a turbo charged 190 then be very careful as the first engines to be fitted with a turbo suffered from engine failure from split con rods and holes appearing in the block . This was later rectified by the use of a much smaller turbo unit that did not over boost the engine. Normally aspirated vertical engines from Leyland were reliable with regular service.. The major draw back was the economy and smoke (Is it a double decker London bus that you are looking at)

If it is a bmw mini then go on line for the site and see if a download is available ( workshop manual). If it is a Leyland mini try auto bookshops.

Almost all 1967 VW beetles came with a 4 speed manual transmission. A few had a "semi-automatic" transmission which was basically a VW manual transmission with an electrically actuated clutch and a torque converter. For the semi-auto, there was no clutch pedal. Instead there was an electrical connector at the bottom of the stick shift. When the driver touched the shift and started to move it to shift gears, the contact would be made and the clutch engaged. This would confuse people if they were used to driving with their hand on the stick shift.

1. If the engine is racing when you go up the hill, then the clutch may be slipping. If you have the semi-auto, then the torque converter may be bad.

2. If the engine is not racing and you're just losing power, then there may not be enough gas getting to the engine. Check the fuel pump output as another answer suggests. The carb's float and needle valve may not be opening all the way, thereby not allowing enough fuel into the carb. Or, you may have a partially blocked main jet in the carb which is not letting enough fuel to flow into the engine.

find out which auto transmission you have in the vehicle ( ask an auto transmission specialist shop) and then get the transmission manual from a technical book shop that covers that make of box
