Hi all,
I have a 2004 GTI 1.8T 5 speed manual with 29,000 miles. When I put the car in reverse it would sometimes make a grinding noise. I would say 3 out of 5 times it would make a grinding noise. I took it to VW dealer and they said it might be the clutch or the transmission, but they want me to fix the clutch first before they would replace the transmission. The clutch including labor would cost me $2000 and the transmission is still under warranty. Is this a problem with my clutch or a problem with my transmission? Every other gear is fine except the reverse gear. Please help! Thanks!!!
Have them flush the fluid out under warranty and put in new fluid, and have them bleed the clutch lines in case air is getting in there. Audi and VW claim lifetime transmission fluid but it's BS - I've changed relatively low mile fluid from these cars and it was horrendous. It's possible that the fluid itself is causing trouble, but it's more likely that it is a synchro problem. If it was a clutch issue, you should have problems with more than just reverse gear - a clutch simply engages and disengages the engine and transmission, regardless of which gear it is. The problem (if not fixed by fluid) is in the transmission, and being under warranty, don't accept another "suggestion" like they're giving you. Changing your clutch isn't gonna do it.

judging by the amount of km it has done i would say the rpm drive is faulty, this measures the amount of rotation in the camshaft and shows the "revolutions per minute". when this goes faulty it stops the read out on the dial, so you want to be looking for a device that measures the speed that the engine is turning, if you have, replace it and it should solve the problem

Before you spend any money , try waiting a second after pushing the cluch all the way, in before selecting reverse .
After putting 50 miles on beetle after transmission swap, fly wheel is making noises. This is the 3rd fly wheel since clutch replaced 1 years ago. What's going on?
