It is located on the outside of the transmission housing under the hood, it goes where a speedometer cable used to hook up on the earlier models Below is a picture of the sensor.
for the p0500, the solution:
The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

Next, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the speed sensor. The location of the sensor depends on your vehicle. The sensor could be on the rear axle, transmission, or perhaps the wheel hub (brake) assembly.
If the wiring and connectors are OK, then check the voltage at the speed sensor. Again, the exact procedure wil depend on your make and model of vehicle.
If everything looks OK, replace the sensor.
They are usually both located on the transmission, however check out chrysler and dodge minivan forums, they will have write ups and pics to show the exact location, the haynes manual is good to have as it may also have pics of the location of the sensors. Hope this helps
Take it to parts store and get trouble code. I think a sensor went out in the transmission. Doest sound bad but should hook up to diagnostic took soon to make sure
he told you to take it to a transmission specialist because that is where those sensors are located. The speed sensor is located in the transmission. It reads the speed by counting the number of teeth on a relucter wheel. (thats the simple explanation). I sounds to me like there might be some debri in the transmission that could be affecting the reading. The engine computer uses that information to control the engine and transmission. Without that information the transmission could go into limp home mode and or have erratic shiffting plus other problems. I would really suggest you get it in for a test and evaluation asap. I do not consider this vehicle to be reliable or safe because the transmission could lockup and or otherwise fail. As a side note, these minivans are notorious for having failing transmissions and most transmission shops find that the majority of their work is on this minivans. One of the reasons I have just kept my full size van.
Had this exact problem in my shop yesterday. Turned out the connector on the speed sensor on the rear differential was broken allowing it to pull out of the sensor. Cleaned out inside the connectors and tied them together with a pull tie. Problem solved.
this code is a transmission code and has a few different tranny sensors that is reads. you could just be low on tranny fluid or is could be the tranny axle speed sensor. odds are if its running fine now it is just low fluid but you could look into the sensor after that. the sensor is what tells the truck when to shift so thats could be why it went up in rpms if the sensor went out bacause then it would know exactly how to shift.
