Sounds like possbly your old starter might have been good starting solinoide is bad, did you replace both starte and soliniode if not replace the starting soliniode should fix problem. If you bought a rebuild it might be bad. take it to Auto Zone they can test both the solinoide and starter.
first off does it have a remote starter hooked to it, if so disable it, my daughters car did the same thing till I took the remote out sometime the remote won't let you start manually in it is still engaged. next make sure all your connections are tight (battery ans starter, I bought a starter at a local parts store it was only acouple of months old for her car it started to do the same thing so I took it back and it failed their test ended up getting a new one. also check the rely located on the left fender wall it is marked starter it may be bad.
check the wires carefully to the starter solinoid, if the wires are fine. it could be a bad starter solinoid or starter. and make sure you are getting enough voltage to starter. a battery when vehicle is off, should read at least 12.6 volts at battery. when running if alternator is ok, it should read at least 14.2-14.7 at battery. hope this helps you!
starter relay, ignition switch, park switch.need to use a volt meter and start at the starter, see if you have at least 12 volts.if there is have the battery tested.does your head lights come on?next no voltage, go to the fuse box under the hood and check for (2) 12 volt powers with the key on and a good ground.if ok replace the relay.next move the trans shifter to neutral with foot on brake and try and start if it starts you need park switch.if not next is the ign.switch to test, you will need to locate the starter wire and check for voltage when starting if none replace the ign.switch hope this helped.also the alternator has nothing to do with the cranking of the engine on this car.
sounds like a starter solenoid went bad which it is easier to replace the whole starter assembly then just the solenoid and you can get one with a LLT Limited Life Time warranty.
Its likely that you have either a bad ignition switch or a bad neutral safety switch (if stickshift, clutch switch) Try starting in neutral...if it starts, change neutral switch (jump across clutch switch, check starting in neutral with your foot on the brake) Ignition switch is on top of steering column under dash.

Does the engine crank over?
