First i would look at your coolant lines/hoses to make sure they are not pinched or collapsed in any way. If they are all good, then i would check your coolant levels and the strength of your coolant. If that checks out, my last thing to do would be to change out the thermostat. A coolant flush would not be a bad idea as well!
if you have high miles, 75k or more I would go ahead and have tempature sensor and thermostat it self change. I don't see battery cable would have any bearing to the temperatureguage or cooling process. Both switch work almost the same, at time it work well other time it read or work incorrectly because it a sign of unit becoming faulty. If the temperature sensor is faulty half of the time it well give you incorrect reading however if the temp sensor working properly and the Thermostat is not, you will also get a high temp reading due to the Thermostat is not working properly allowing the hot antifreeze to flow out from the engine to the radiator which cause the hot antifreeze to be remain lock up in the engine block. Thermostat suppose to open and close when it reach its temperature; at the same time I would also replace thermostat switch which operate the cooling fan. all three tend to go bad over times; replacing all three is a great ideas. I've had problems with Datsun (later Nissan) engines hanging the closed thermostat until it boiled, then the thermostat released and operated normally. If you increase the small vent hole in the thermostat valve plate a small amount, the problem disappears. It seems that steam from engine operation gathers behind the thermostat sensing bulb and delays opening. The increase in vent hole size lets the steam through and allows the hot water to open the valve. Hope this helps!
Look in your manual and see if you have air bleeds for the cooling system. Pressure test the system, and remember to have heater on HIGH during filling and testing.
The pressure test will help you to know if you have much air in the system.
You did not mention if the FANS are coming on, I presume so, but if not, resolve that issue, typically a heat sensor.....
If you find no leaks and not much air in the system, get vehicle hot, by driving, shut down and feel around on the radiator, if you have cooler spots, it may have restricted portions. If so, replace it, do not waste time repairing it....
it seems to me that your fan is not working properly ,check the relay first you might get lucky.if not i would start looking for a bad connection or in replacing the fan
