I have 1998 Escort that cranks, but won't start. Checked fuel shut-off switch, timing belt intact. Running when parked, with a really rough idle, but won't even try to start. Fuel pump activates when key is turned on.
What can I check? Don't know yet if I have a spark at plug (need another person to crank it for me) If no spark, where do I start checking? If spark is there, how do I check fuel pressure? any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

You say the timing belt is intact, so I assume you have checked compression. Have you checked base fuel pressure and are you getting spark to the plugs ?
cut off switch could still be bad. First my sure gas is getting to the engine....if so then this indicates that fuel system is working properly. Sounds like car may not be firering. Things that could cause this is coil bad, ingnition modual failed or maybe pickup coil."sensor maybe some where..timing out which would indicate timing belt or chain or gears are broke......Keep in mind these are just some things that could cause your problem and gives you ideal what to look for........hope this info helps and good luck....Please rate this post and if you need more help then fill free to contact me and we will try to get ya back on the road......
You did not say anything about the fuel system. Have you checked the fuel pressure ? Has the fuel filter been replaced this year ? Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ? Could be low fuel pressure or a faulty throttle position sensor among other things.
if it shuts off while driving and will not start back up for at least 10 minutes, then it may be the crank sensor doing this. is check engine light on! if so get it scanned to find problem code. if no scanner, auto-zone will scan for free. if light is on. CPS symtoms are: car dies and won't re-start till it cools down, or won't start
at all. good-day ! crank sensor timing will be out of sync. it controls timing and sends info to pcm.
recheck your cam timing belt, sounds like it jumped on you. PCV valves generally plug into the valve cover and you would have had to seen it when you pulled the head. not all cars have them
You may have a valve spring broken,or the timing has jumped,do not try and start it again, have the timing belt checked first cause it can bend a valve,if it hasn`t already. If this was at all helpful, please rate, thank you
