Suggitt1, Sorry to say but, you don't fix mass air flow sensors, you replace them. Did you get a code for this problem? If so, replace the sensor and then have the code cleared. Good luck with this.

Trying to locate o2 sensor and massive air flow sensor on 2000 taurus

you didnt say what motor you had, but heres a few tips

the MASS (not massive) Air flow sensor -MAF is located between the air filter assembly and the throttle body

the O2 sensors are located either in the exhaust manifold and/or the exhaust pipes, many times before and after the cat. convertor.

anyplace you are getting your replacement parts from should be able to tell you right where these components are located

Does a 1996 Ford Taurus 3.0 have a hot wire type mass air flow sensor or a vane type? Would spraying carb cleaner into the MAF fix the problem of hard cold engine start? Once the engine warms up does the...

TheMobilian, Yes, the Mass Air Flow is a Hot Wire type. There is a spray made for the mass called mas air flow cleaner. Regular cab cleaner is too harsh and can eat the coating inside mass air flow and it's delicate parts. Use throttle bore foam cleaner; it works like bathroom scrubbing bubbles and eats the gum and varnish. When engine warms up (closed Loop) both sensors work together giving input to ecm for output. Have someone with a live data reader read both sensors. (Let me know the readings?)

Image Mass Air Flow(MAF)Sensor

PURPOSE

The Mas s Air flow (MAT) sensor measure s the amount of air flowing into the engine.

This value is used by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in calculating the required

Fuel injector pulse within order to provide the desired air fuel ratio. This input can also

be used in determining Electronic Pressure Control (EPC). Shift and torque converter

clutch scheduling.

CONSTRUCTION

The MAE sensor is located directly in the airflow path between the air cleaner housing

and the throttle body. Ail air entering the intake manifold must pass through the sensor.

Located in the MAT sensor directly in the airstream are two platinum wires, a hot wire

heated by electrical current and a cold reference wire. The MAF sensor uses the air flow

across these wires to calculate its output.

OPERATION

The hot wire is maintained at 200CC (392CF) above ambient temperature as measured by

a constant cold *e. The current required to maintain the temperature of the hot wire is

proportional to the air mass flow. The MAE sensor then measures the amount of

electrical current required to maintain this temperature difference and converts this

value to an analog DC voltage. This output varies directly with the mass air flow rate.

Pay attention to the Paragraph about the torq converter.

99 Grand Prix idles funny, dies got code p0102,

this vehicle most likely has a mass air flow sensor it may have got accidently unplugged or the air tube from mass airflow to engine is not connected well or it could be that you have indeed a bad mass air flow sensor they do make a special cleaner that you may want to try before purchasing a mass air flow sensor or purchasing one from salvage yard the symptoms you describe would be created by a bad massair flowsensor

Where is the map sensor located and how do I install it in a 1992

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube by loosening the retaining clamps, then tag and disconnect any hoses or tubes.
  3. Disengage the engine control sensor wiring connector from the mass air flow sensor.
  4. Remove the four retaining bolts, then carefully remove the sensor from the vehicle.
  5. Discard the mass air flow gasket.
To install:
  1. Position the mass air flow sensor with a new gasket onto the air cleaner cover.
  2. Install the four retaining bolts, then tighten them to 25 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  3. Install the air cleaner outlet tube by aligning the white identification mark on the tube with the tube stop on the throttle body, then tighten the retaining clamps to 24-48 inch lbs. (2.7-5.4 Nm).
  4. Engage the engine control sensor wiring connector to the mass air flow sensor.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for vacuum leaks.

My 1998 ford taurus wagon misfires when I step on the gas at 30mph and about- occassionally the service engine soon light blinks

clean the MAF sensor heated wires inside MAF with carb cleaner gently with a toothbush first. Then disconnect battery for 1 hour and reconnect and drive for 10 miles so computer can relearn clean MAF sensor.

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor The mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor) (12B579) :
  • is located between the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) and the throttle body (9E926) .
  • uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine. Air passing over the hot wire causes it to cool.
  • sends an analog voltage signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) to determine the intake air mass. The powertrain control module will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width in order to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.
The mass air flow sensor hot wire sensing element and housing are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a complete assembly.

I have a 1995 ford taurus engine stalls when idling and smells of gas when accelerating it bucks. Changed fuel filter, could it be mass air flow sensor?

Start with smaller problems and check the fuel pressure regulator, the mass air flow sensor for these vehicles is pretty pricy. Is the check engine light on? If so, head to your nearest auto zone and have them check for trouble codes. If the check engine light isn't on, its not likely your mass air flow sensor
