I'm replacing the right rear brake caliper on a 1996 ford taurus. detatching the emergency brake cable is not too difficult however reattaching it does seem to be an issue! how do i get it back into the new e-brake lever on the new caliper? is this a sheer strength issue or is there a simple way. I cannot seem to find a functioning tensioning point along the cable to loosen (i.e. the only thing that looks like it might be on the drivers side WILL NOT budge). thank you.

SOURCE: ford fivehundredright rear brake caliper wont retract

Is this the ratcheting style caliper? If so, you really should be using the proper tool to turn these style calipers back into their bore, and both calipers should turn clockwise to retract them back in. Also, if the piston was too far out you may have a hard time getting it to go back in. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: how do I adjust emergency brake cable on 1999 ford

FIRST adjust rear brake starwheel while spinning tire FOWARD. then alongside drivers side of car find emergency brake cable adjustment (long threaded rod with nut) . hold one end of rod with vise-grips and turn nut until emer. brake cable has less slack in it. now go inside car and apply e-brake.you dont want the pedal to stop right away but u also dont want too much"travel" in the pedal.so about halfway is IDEAL. IMPORTANT- once the brake cable is adjusted and the car wont roll foward in gear with the brake on and applying a little "gas"-make sure with brake OFF that rear wheels turn freely. hope this helps.

SOURCE: how to reset brake caliper

The pistons in all calipers I have seen can be forced back into their seat to allow new brake pads to clear. If constructed as most, a C-clamp can be used to press the cylinder back in.

How do I dis-connect the parking brake cable to replace a wheel brake caliper?

Go and find a mechanic to do that for you safely.
You can end up without brakes at all doing some of it incorrectly. Find a reputable vehicle mechanic that can do this and keep you safely braking after the repair.

How do I adjust the emergency brake?

Over here we call it a parking brake - hardly any of our cars are autos.

Parking brakes usually connect to the rear disc brake calipers but some manufacturers use a small drum brake in the disc centre for parking purposes due to the complexity of the caliper with integral parking brake.

When adjusting a parking brake it is important in most designs for the cable to be adjusted only to remove any free play without moving the caliper levers from the backstops and then if the parking brake lever or pedal travel is excessive it must be because of wear or other faults. Sometimes that basic requirement must be taken with a pinch or two of "experienced" salt...

Ford have a self adjusting parking brake I have experience of. A spring within the system preloads the cable eliminating all slack in the cable so the cable moves the caliper levers from the first. The main problem with the system is the preload spring is sometimes strong enough to overcome the resistance of the caliper spring and cause a binding brake. No manual adjustment was provided.
In that case I find fabricating and fitting brackets to anchor additional return springs to the calipers is a must.

I remember that each caliper is pushed back by "Rollout" after the brakes are pressed. If the caliper is harder to move it my not push back. May have to change O-ring seals on caliper.

Hope this helps.

HOW DO I CHANGE THE BRAKES REAR ON 2008 TAURUS. I

Hi, if you are replacing the rear pads, you will need a special caliper tool(can be purchased or rented from Autozone or Discount Auto Parts) to reseat the piston as it has to be turned or rotated inward to reseat..
ameezle_2.png

To move the piston back into the caliper, the LH piston is turned clockwise and the RH piston is turned counterclockwise. NOTE: A moderate to heavy force toward the caliper piston must be applied. If sufficient force is not applied, the internal park brake mechanism clutch cone will not engage and the piston will not compress. Using the special tool (or equivalent such as OTC tool 7317A), compress the brake caliper piston into its cylinder.

In an emergency, you can use needle nose pliers, but be careful not to pinch the rubber boot or seal as this will create a leak of brake fluid....

How to release tension on parking brake cable to remove from rear caliper - 2008 Ford Taurus X

you should'nt have any tension on the parking brake, unless it's on. check the parking brake to insure that it's in the off position. chock" the rear wheels,to make sure the car does'nt roll while you're jacking it up and "always use jackstands,do not trust your jack" does your brake caliper piston have a + on it?it will be on the brake caliper piston itself, if so,then you need to back the brake caliper piston back in by turning it counterclockwise, auto parts stores sell a special tool to back the brake calipers back into place, i've always used a straight screwdriver,to turn the piston counterclockwise some do turn clockwise though to retract the brake piston. a simple call to the auto parts store where you're purchasing the brakes will tell you which way the piston will need to be retracted.other wise,it's a simple brake replacement, just push the brake caliper cylinder with a "C" clamp to retract the brake caliper, also,if you are replacing brake rotors, purchase the brake kleen to spray on the new brake rotors when you replace those.they have a clear film on them, you'll need to remove that film to insure no future issues with the brake rotors.simply spray the front and back of the brake rotors with this spray to remove the protective "film"and as always, thank you,for choosing fixya.com!

Dragging right front brake

Then it it most likely something other than the caliper, like maybe the master cylinder or some brake line problem it your problem is only on one brake. I assumed that you changed the pads and rotor as well (and did both sides at the same time) Rick
