Next time someone tells you that, escort them to a computer and ask them to show you. Service manuals and repair manuals are books, someone wrote them and thus has a copyright, just like music and movies. Makes sense right?
Now if you can afford to buy gasoline, you can afford to buy a repair manual which some pirate has copied to a DVD and is selling for 5 bucks delivered on eBay. Authors do not have a watchdog on eBay staff as do composers and directors. There are also many folks selling used hard copy chiltons and haynes manuals for everything with wheels.
I think what you really need however is an owners manual, these come for free in the glove box and cover routine things like bulb replacement, fluids, tire sizes and that all important how to set the clock. If your car is missing its owners manual, these also are sold on eBay for less than the price of a half tank of gas, they can also be stolen at any local mall, just drive around and find an unlocked car which looks like yours. What used to be called junkyards also have mountains of them laying around in the office with the pulled radios.
There are online service manuals "free" of charge, but usually these are only available by service technicians that have an account with the service manual provider through the car dealer, or repair facility the service tech works for. If you know a mechanic who works for a dealer, you can ask if they can download and print what repair diagrams you need to help you
