I have a 1993 Mercedes 190E 2.6 and cannot get the air conditioner compressor to engage. How do I check the dashboard switch to see if it has gone bad? Anyother suggestions also would be welcome.

Buy freon at any auto store at hook up to low side run the engine up to 2K rpms. Low side at 2K rpms should be around 35 psi with compressor engaged. Usually takes 3-4 cans.
You cannot accuratly check the freon level without compressor engaged. Without car running that needle better be pegged or its low. Charge with car running with dials set to max cool with fan speed on hi. Slowly while charging with compressor engaged bring it up to 2K rppms while filling. Should take around 3 cans. Get the stuff with stop leak.
there should be an electric water pump exclusively for the heater. on these 201 body cars it should be under the hood, on the passenger side, near the fender well. when the heater is engadged, this pymp should turn on pushing the hot water into the heater core. if these are not working, it will obstruct the water flow.
there are 2 fuel pump relays on the mercedes so it is unlikly that they have both gone on it....check your over voltage relaytell me what happens [email protected]
Could be a number of things...electrical connections causing the compressor not to run. Turn on AC and turn your thermostat all the way to cool...now visually check to see if compressor is engaged and not just free wheeling. Most likely you lost your refridgerant due to leak in the system...would need to find leak and repair then have your system re-charged with refridgerant. Best case scenario...your system just needs a charge of refridgerant due to not having enough.
you might check the fuse box & relays. and the ac shouldn't cost quite that much if you buy the part yourself. if you tell me what year, model, and engine i can look up part # and cost for you. the labor shouldn't cost more than $300 if you bring your own compressor.
If there is no gas in the system it as you pointed out the low pressure switch will shut the power to the clutch in the compressor off. your pressureswitch should be located near the dryer at the front of your Benz. You could try and bridge it to see if the compressor engages, how ever DO NOT try and keep it engaged without gas in the system or you may find yourself having to change the compressor again.
