1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.

SOURCE: The car will only go in reverse. It will not even go in 1st, 2nd, or overdrive. Any solutions?

it sounds like you have low fluid or a bad front pump on your tranny.make sure you are checking your transmission fluid correctly. reverse is the lowest gear so it is usually the last to go.

SOURCE: when I put car into drive gear takes off real

The Catera is designed to heat the automatic transmission fluid when cold by extending the time the car stays in first gear. This is by design and not a defect.

SOURCE: Transmission jerks from 1st to 2nd gear after car

That trans is a 4l60e. It has what is called a pressure control solenoid that as the name indicates controls the pressure in the trans. When the solenoid fails, it defaults to high pressure so the unit will not ship. It will cause harsh shifts. Most electronic items that are near failure will begin to show shut down failure when they get how and work when they are cold. This may or may not set a code. Look for a Pressure Regulator code

To replace it you have to pull the pan, and I am not sure, but you may have to pull the valve body. I do not recommend an armature do this. It is best to find a independent shop that specializes in transmissions and has a good reputation and have them do the work.

I have a 1999 chev 1500 4x4 will not shift any higher than 2nd gear. when it tries to shift it's like it goes int nutreal and you have to manuely down shift to make go back into gear

The problem could be related to service bulletin. It refers to check for loss of power to the transmission shift solenoids. This defaults the transmission to second gear. The most likely cause of this condition may be a loss of voltage to the transmission solenoid power supply circuit. This condition may also be the result of an incorrect installation of an aftermarket electronic device such as a remote starter or alarm system. If the vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket electronic device, and the DTCs are being set when the device is being used, verify that the appropriate fuse is being supplied battery voltage during operation. If voltage is not present at this fuse, these DTCs will be set due to lack of voltage at the solenoids. This condition is most likely to occur with an incorrectly installed remote starting system. With the ignition switch in the run position, test for battery voltage at the circuit fuse in the transmission solenoid power supply circuit. If battery voltage is present at the fuse, inspect the ignition voltage circuit between the fuse and the transmission for possible opens, else, test for continuity between the fuse and the ignition switch. If NO continuity is between the fuse and the ignition switch, repair the open in that circuit. If you have continuity between the fuse and the ignition switch, the most likely cause is the ignition switch. Replace the ignition switch. Try putting it in 2nd, then 1st, if that works, sounds like you clutch is bad or defective. 1st gear has no syncro to slow the gears down, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th do.

1st and 2nd shift error on code reader in trans

Shift error codes are enabled not only if the solonoids are faulty, does your scanner show you the solonoids switching? you could have a wiring fault. It could also be the pcm not allowing the solonoids to activate. These complicated systems are very difficult to diagnose for us profesionals with all the scanners and machines we have. Find a transmission shop in your area with a system to drive the vehicle bypassing the computor system, this will determine electrical or internal trans failure. But before you do anything check your conections from the transmission to the pcm. Also all the engine conectors and earth straps.
