Its a 1998 B3000 and I'm having a problem with the engine running really rough. It will skip and sounds real throaty when it is cold but when it warms up it not as bad but still does it. The gas mileage is really,really bad. I get 17 hwy. Ive changed the plugs ,wires, egr valve, fuel filter and pump, and everything in the vacuum system and still having problems.

SOURCE: 2000 silverado 4.8 v8 runs bad when it is cold out side.

Try replacing the coolant temperature sensor for the injection system.

Iam only going to guess at this one.
So have it checked out,don't take my word

If your converter is 17 years old,it may be blocked (worn out),thus lack of power.

Black Tailpipe-rich condition or prior ignition issues,before new parts went on.

Really old O2 Sensors.

Possibly ignition wires. Is the engine light on? If yes, have the car scanned for trouble codes and report codes to FixYa.

Hi, welcome to FixYa.com my name is Shawn and I will be answering your question.
Two possible causes first a bad DPFE sensor which monitors EGR flow or next clogged EGR ports. Remove the throttle body 4 8mm bolts and a cable then clean the EGR passage out. Clear the code by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes.

that is called a STALL.
the engine was running , but now its STALLED.
and all lamps come on that is a Feature of all cars. (modern)
the that is the lamp self test. same as when you first turn on the key.
the operators guide explains all that...........
so the real question is why it stalls.
it means the engine is running so bad the EFI brain could not avoid the stall, it tries REAL HARD not to stall.
we do tests to find true cause. but usually its this.
1: engine never tuned up. the 60,000mile service POINTS skipped.
hark it fails. (99% of all old cars do that, due to skips)
2: LOST spark , see #1
3: lost fueling, see #1 filters. or worse.
4: flooding, over fueling. more tests.

Possibility of a vacuum leak somewhere around your engine. That would cause what you are experiencing and cause a check engine light as well.

Rough idle
if its petrol, its going to be the idle speed or stepper motor ,just also check the air flow meter ,make sure there is no rubbish in the mesh in there ,,there is also a tiny little skinny wire in there ,make sure its in one piece ,dont touch it with your hands just use lite compressed air to blow it clean

E ng lite came on pulled to stop light engine ran rough and was shaking ck oil was low filled oil ran better this am wife went to take truck to work got to the end of block engine ran rough brought back...
I don't think the rough running had much to do with oil level, since it started running rough a 2nd time. Check the fuel filter and ignition timing.

Have you changed the plugs, if any are fouled out or if any are worn, it takes more to fire it under load and may be spark knocking because one of the plugs can't fire off all the gas and cause it to skip or idle rough.
