My jeep rattles in transfer case. Can I temporarily unhook the front drive shaft and just run with the back one until can be fixed? Any suggestions?

Yes, you can. Your jeep will still run fine with just the rear wheels powered. I ran a 93 Grand Cherokee without a front drive shaft for years with no problems.

How do you remove the front drive shaft in a 1995 jeep grand cherokee limited

Use white paint, chalk or a scribe to mark the relationship of the front U joint to the front diferential pinion yoke. Mark the relationship of the rear U joint flange to the transfer case companion flange. Unbolt the front end of the drive shaft from the pinion yoke and the rear end from the transfer case companion flange and remove the drive shaft from the vehicle.
hope thei info helps.

I have a 2003 gmc envoy the service 4wd light came on and 4wd didnt engage what do you think the the problem is

Possible the actuator on the front axle is bad! You need to see if the front drive shaft is rotating when the 4HI is engaged with out running yourselft over in the process.

There is one actuator on the axle and one on the transfer case, the one on the trnsfer case locks the drive shaft in ans out of 4HI and 4LO. The actuator on the frontaxle locsk the front drive shaft in
.

Also, try the wires going to the front actuator, they seem to break very easy and short, also the front Actuator, check it.
  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  2. Drain the transfer case.
  3. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
  4. On models equipped with the NP208 transfer case, place the case in the 4H position.
  5. Remove the skid plate and if necessary, the crossmember support.
  6. If necessary, on trucks with automatic transmission, disconnect the strut rod.
  7. Tag and unplug all electrical connections and hoses from the transfer case.
  8. On models equipped with the NP208 transfer case, remove the parking brake cable guide from the pivot on the right frame rail.
  9. Matchmark the driveshafts, disconnect them, and remove them.
  10. Disconnect the shift lever rod.
  11. Support the transfer case and remove the bolts attaching the transfer case to transmission adapter.
  12. Move the transfer case to the rear until the input shaft clears the adapter and lower the transfer case from the truck.

Sounds as though you a have a problem with the switch itself, although it could be the encoder on the transfer case , me--- I would have it checked at a transmision shop where they have a computer to check it. Every time you unhook a wire on the truck , you should have the + cable off the battery, cause this puts another code into your main computer.

Keep us uopdated.

2000 jeep GC limited front axle problems

First thing to test is to see if the front driveshaft is getting engaged from the transfer case. With the vehicle in 4x4, and engine shut off, and in park, crawl under and try to turn the front driveshaft by hand. The driveshaft looks like a pipe that runs from the transfer case, located just behind the engine/transmission, to the front differential. If it rotates by hand, there is a problem with the transfer case. Some Jeeps have a vacuum actuator on the front diff that slides a collar inside the axle tube to engage it. I will watch for you findings, and you can leave me another message, and I will be happy to chat back with you on your findings.

Front drive shaft/transfer case removal 03 chevy trailblazer 4wd

Sounds like you got it. They are heavy and ocward (spelling?). As for the front drive shaft take the bolts out and give it a couple of wacks with a dead blow hammer then slide it out. Maybe a few days before hand give it a good spray down with wd40 or like product. Also when you get to the last bolt for the t-case to trans loosen it half way then put a drain bucket under it and seperate it a little and let the trans fluid drain some, or you will be wearing it.

When i get to 55 mph i hear i popping in the front.Ive replaced both cv joints and a wheel bearing, but it didnt help.Iinspected the spider gears but they were fine.I disconnected the front drive shaft now...

Check the front differential for proper spacing inside, also the bearings. Then check the homocinetic joint right behind the front diff. on the drive shaft. If all of them are fine, open the oil screw at the transfer case, drain the oil and check if there are some metal in it. After draining the oil out, use a flat screw driver, insert it into the transfer case (be careful!!) to locate the drive chain. check if there she is very loose ( if you can slide the chain more than 1/2" it need to be replaced). To rule out the transfer case, disconnect the rear drice shaft (U-Joint on rear diff. and then slide them out of the case), disconnect the front drice shaft right on the transfer case (U-Joint), disconnect the shifter and any wiring you find on the case, remove the bolts from the chassie and then remoce the bolts between the case and the auto transmission and slide the case backward till you have it in your hand. Install a new or rebuilt one the same way back, fill it with auto trasmssion fluid as told in the user manual. Do not overfill the case and do not use other fluid as in the user/service manual.

91 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, 2WD won't engage, 4WD is fine!

It sounds like your driveline to the rear wheels is broken. Could be transfer case output shaft to the rear wheels has broken. Try disconnecting the rear drive shaft and see if you can turn it by hand with the transfer case engaged in 2WD. If you can turn it while the Sahara is in gear, the output shaft is no longer connected to the engine for some reason.
