2002 pontiac grand prix abs and trac off light on. grinding when brakes are applied. i have had both front wheel bearings replaced. not helping. the front brakes were replace approximately 1 year ago. what could this be?
Hey, ihad this problem with abx and trac off light on all the time even after having replaced the wheel bearing twiice. how i fixed it was to replace the wiring harness and poof issue resolved. a technical service bulletin is available for this issue
Ok, so I have had my 2000 grand prix for 7 years now and I have had all these problems Here is what I did to fix them. OK first and easiest FREE fix is for the individual that could not get the key out of the ignition or turn all the way to off. There is a little piece of plastic or something close under the steering collum, pull that out (it's bassically a cover or plug) then there is a button up in there to release the key. Push that in and bang free, now the fix is ghetto but free and works just put something in there to hold that up and put the plug back in I used a piese of paper rolled and it's worked for say the last three years now, good luck. Now on to the ABS I had the wheel speed sensor go out on the drivers side and ended up replacing both fronts since I was at it and it was gone. Now mind you it is a good idea anyhow since grand prix's have a thing for the front bearings to go out especially the passanger front. So kill two birds with one stone. I was able to look on ebay and get some good prices on hubs and even oriellys was not bad, good luck with this one as well hope this info helps you all.
If the ABS sensor wire isnt put back inthe absolute lowest position it will come unpluged or break when steering or rough road driving its tight but must be done correctly
If you had your ball joints replaced this could cause the connector to be just a fraction to short. it will still clip together but it will pull just enough to break the wire signal to cause the lights to come on. I went to the wreckers and picked up two sensor clips cut them off extra long and re-wired it myself and I had the car for another 4-5 years with no issues.
Firestone told me my GP need rotors in the front after some insistance on my part they put it on the computer and it turned out to be a rear hub, $114 at advanced auto.
The trac light on my 2002 grand prix was caused by the sencer in the wheel bearing.
I had the same problem - it has to do with your front hub. Probably best to take into the dealership

I have been having the same issue for approximately one year. At first, the Trac Off/ABS lights would come one only once and a while, and would 'clear' when the car was turned off. Eventually, the lights were on all the time, even upon the ititial startup of the car. After testing and code pulling at a GM dealership, a dead EBCM (ABS computer) was found to be the issue. My car was no longer under warranty, and cost me $1200 for a new one. Ouch. Got the vehicle back, no problem, no lights, etc. About a month later (4-5 months ago) I went over a speed bump and BAM! lights back on. I immediately pulled over turned the car off, started back up and the lights were gone.
Since then, when I go over bumps/potholes, things of that nature, sometimes even just driving along on flat road, same issue. I can feel grinding in the brake pedal (which I assume is the ABS engaging) and the lights come on. I brought it back to the dealership, they pulled the codes again and were adamant that it wasn't the computer. They checked the rotors and brakes, and said they looked fine as well. The mechanic suggested it may be the wheel speed sensor, which on this year (2002 Grand Prix GTP) is part of the hub assembly which runs about $700. I'm weary of doing this, because if it doesn't fix the problems with the lights, I still have to pay.
They also checked the ball joints at the same time and said everything looked fine, there was nothing apparently wrong with the car. I did have a tire puncture months before which I replaced with a new one (left front). The mechanic said the difference in tread could also be screwing with the sensors and may be causing the ABS to engage. He moved the oddball tire to the rear, but the problem persisted. I really don't want to shell out the $$$ for two new hub assemblies which may potentially not even be the problem. I feel your pain, and this has been an ongoing problem for me. I'm only 24, and this is only the second vehicle I've owned. My first car didn't have ABS, which at this point I'm willing to trade the additional safety gain for the multiple headaches and large repair costs! No problems with the car other than this. I want to buy American, but I just don't know think I can stomach any more of this ****; I won't be buying GM again that's for sure.
Incredible, I am having the exact same problem. I have a 2001 I just paid off this month. This car has been an overwhelming headache. Just got done putting in a new catalytic converter. Now, intermittently, when I apply pressure on the brakes, I hear a groan and a grunt. My shop says the brakes are fine, just had brake work done within the year. The ABS light comes on periodically. This car is a freaking headache. No gauges work anymore except the spedometer. Gas gauge and temp gauge died a year ago. Often I can't turn the ignition to the off position. IT freezes. Then they wonder why we are buying foreign?
I am having the same problem with my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. At first the car ran great no problems. I have had the car a year and absolutely love it. Just a day ago my abs/trac off lights came on. After shutting the car off they stayed off all day. Today when i got in the car to drive it they came back on. I have been having problems with this car for the last 5 mths and the dealership has done nothing to fix any of the problems. The first problem i have is the when u shift the car in drive it sometimes hesitates to go as as if the car is gonna shut off then it goes. Another problem i have is my ground on my battery is forever loose. The car goes from lights interior/exterior, to when brakes applied absolute darkness interior and very dim to nothing on the outside. I have repeatedly tried to get the dealership to look at my car and keep finding excuses as to why they dont have the time or people to look at it. The car itself has not been a headache. The dealership has. The car is under warranty. Why are they refusing? When my car was taking in for the hesitation problem they didnt hook my car up to the machine to find the problem they drove it, then called me to say "Ma'am we drove your car and it didnt hesitate when we drove it." Well I told them this was not a everytime I shifted to drive to go, that this was an occasional problem. Guess what problem never fixed. This is a great problem as i now feel the dealership is a great rip-off and treat customers as a nothing to them. Any Advice anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I have the same problem with my car. I bought new in 2003 (demo) and to this day, the problem is still the same. Its not the brakes. I was at the dealership and they have changed hub assemblies and harness...still doesn't solve the problem. I will NEVER buy a Pontiac in my lifetime. The dealership just kept changing the same parts over and over. They were taking care of the symptons instead of the problem. I also noticed that if I turn my wheel to the right or left sharp, the ABS and Trac light comes on and my brakes are not working properly. Shut the car off and re-start...the lights will go out. Since my "warranty" has run out, they no longer want to spend the money or time worrying about the car. What a joke this has been.
Same issue guys, 2002 pontiac grand prix.  My abs light and trac off lights never turn off unless the car goes off.  I have also replaced the catalytic converter, which the dealership said looked like someone had jammed a potatoe in to it.  I have also replaced a window  motor and wheel bearings three times.  Basically this car blows!! and now its in such bad shape selling it would be worthless.  Good luck on finding new cars everyone.  Screw GM!
I have a 2003 Grand Am, I bought the car 2 years ago and had to replace the transimission 2 months after purchasing the car. I'm totaly surprised such major work was needed on a vehicle that was only 3 years old. I've recently had problems with the "Service Engine Soon" light staying on after the car has been serviced and several diagnostic tests run, only to find the gas cap is what kept having to be replaced. The light is back on. 2 weeks ago I got my front and back brakes replaced.Yesterday the temp gage has gone up to 260 and the light came on, 30 seconds after that the trac off light came on and the car started to make a grinding sound and I had to force it to excelorate. Please help, does either of these issues have anything to do with one another?
I have a very good mechanic. Brakes and wheels were making a "bad" sound and the ABS light coming on. It was a cable hanging down... with computers anything that goes wrong can set off a series of "warnings" that the car needs to be checked. Those red lights, such as "service engine soon" are not Specific. A good mechanic can figure it out. And I don't mean a GM mechanic. Mine charged me $37.00, re-atached the loose wire/cable/sensor and now everything is fine.
Similar problems with the ABS/Traction Control.....As my car accelerates there is a winding sound coming from the front wheels and gets louder and more high pitched as I pick up speed. It almost sounds like a single enging jet plane. I just had the brakes replaced a year ago. The ABS and Traction lights are on and am not sure if this is a major repair or something simple. I will never buy a pontiac again!

I bought my car used about a year ago and the same thing has been happening to me for a few months now. it's really aggrivating when i pull out of a parking space and those lights come on... and i restart my car like three times before they stay off. I took my car to a mechanic and they said they can't tell what the problem is.

Since I have no idea what your driving habits are I don't know if the front brake pads are worn out, but it sure sounds like they are, time means nothing, drivers braking habits ans distance are what wear brakes out, and if you guys feel any better the imports have ton's of postings for problems to, not just domestic, I have a Corvette, a Dodge Magnum, a Buick Century and a Dodge Dakota, all are excellent cars with no problems, all are at least ten years old except the Magnum which is 4 years old.
try replacing speed sensors located on or around wheel bearing area or behind or below rotors. look up diagram for speed sensors for that yr.
well the way the make brake pads and rotors anymore is reason why ppl have these problems with all brands and makes of cars. Rule of thumb is before putting on new brake pads have the rotors calibrated for thickness or just replace with new rotors.
