It's not in the oil pan, it's located somewhere on the block.
Good luck finding the oil filter on your 2005 BMW X5
Check Autozone.com's site. I was having trouble with it, unfortunately, because they were experiencing technical diifficulty with the 'oil filter' section of their site, when I clicked on 'Replace'.
Autozone's website didn't have a location for it under the 'location' part of their website.
The Location of the oil filter depends on which engine you have in your CTS. the 3.2 engine the oil filter is located on the bottom of the engine to the left of the oil pan. It is not a screw on type filter it is a canister filter. You will have to unscrew the lid to gain access to the oil filter. On the 3.6 Engine the oil filter is also a canister filter but it is located on the top side of the engine. On the drivers side around the center of the engine cover. It will take a 15/16 socket to remove the lid.

If this is the V6 engine, your oil filter should be a canister type filter, it should be located on the passenger side, underneath at the front of the engine. You should see what looks like a black cap (about the size of an oil filter) your oil filter is located inside this canister. Hope this helps.
The oil filter is in a filter housing located on the top of the engine. Take the engine cover off. The 3, 10mm nuts are located under the circular pop-off covers that attach the plastic engine cover. You should see the oil filter housing to the right of the engine valve cover. The oil filter housing is a black, plastic cylinder with a cover that unscrews. The filter is inside of this. Make sure you drain the oil before unscrewing the cover to the filter housing.
