What's PCM n DTC's and what should they read thanks

  • Anonymous Jun 08, 2011

PCM = Powertrain control module (vehicle computer). DTC = Diagnostic trouble codes. Your vehicle has the ability to identify and warn of an issue with engine management components by way of storing trouble codes. A code reader is needed to read these codes, then a diagnostic approach is started from there. Any well supplied auto store sells code readers for about 40 dollars, and most will connect their own code reader to see if codes are present for free. Don't replace anymore parts until this is done.

My 1993 jeep grand cherokee laredo idles rough after warm up. it also idels high around 2000 rpm at start up sometimes and needs to be shut off and restarted to calm idle speed. whats is causing the...

usually rough Idle is not noticable at high ildle. Once it is idles normally try Disconnecting one injector at a time. If the idle stays the same than that cylinder is the culprit. Remove that spark. If it is wet than do a compression test. Should read better than 100lbs of compression. If compression is good take a spark plug and hook it into the end of the plug wire.Lay it across the intake, start the car and watch for spark. If you have spark than you probably have a bad injector. A miss will cause the vehicle to idle high. The computer is trying to keep the car from dieing out. Hope this helps. No spark do a tune up.

I have a problem with my grand cherokee laredo v8 1998 the problem is when its on idle it idle perfect buth sudenley the pump star making a noise and the noise goose high the fuel preshure drops and the...

ok, 2 things are happening, the most obvious is that you are low on fuel the pump spins faster, becauase there is no fuel to pressurise the lines

secondly, and more likely the fuel pump is failing, it is called cavitation. the pump pressurises the lines and there is enough fuel to keep the engine alive at idle, or at 5,000 revs. however, if the pump is failing it is only pumping enough to keep it at idle, and not enough to keep up with the demand of higher engine speeds.

soon enough, the pump will fail altogether, and and the engine will not start

I have a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 liter that won't idle

Check your throtle postition sensor. It monitors what postion the throtle is at and sends that info to the ecm. It will go bad and cause that problem.

1999 Jeep grand cherokee limited - irregular idle

I don 't know if I can solve it, but I had a very similar problem on a 2002 Grd Cherokee Laredo. It ended up being the Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS). Unfortunately the part alone is about $125 and and total installed cost was about $250. It would idle high at first, then gradually work it self down to a normal idle. Once it was warmed up it it would have an up and down RPM during idling, and several times it stalled out at intersections. There was also a lot of transmission clunking going on when you put it in reverse or drive.
Runs like a dream now. Clunking is gone and idle speed is just right.

1995 Jeep grand cherokee is missing while running. When it is under a heavy load (driving fast) it runs fine. When idleing and slow driving it spits and sputters.

I have the same problem on my 95 grand cherokee laredo. Sometimes it starts out fine and after about 10 miles it starts spitting and sputtering. Then after a while it seems to clean out and run fine again for a little while. Then other times it starts out spitting and sputtering at the begining. I changed the fuel filter and that was not it. It is a 4.0L 6cyc. Any Ideas?

Thanks,

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Problem

Idle prolem could be a dirty throttle body or sticky air idle control motor.
If the Jeep is a 6 cly. the adjustment for the belt is the power steering pump.
If the Jeep is an 8 cyl. the tensioner is on the pass. side of car.
