if you look down into the latch with a flash light you should see the hood release cable. it will be attached to a lever. if the lever is stuck all the way to the drivers side than the latch is sticking. Spray some penetrating lube into the latch and then use a thin blade screwdriver to help push it the other way. Continue to spray lubricant, pull the hood release, and move the lever with a screwdriver until it moves freely.
I kjnow this video is a ford but the mechanism is the same
there is a safety latch in the lock that you have to pull sideways to get the bonnet open after you pull the cable
That stops the hood from opening at speed
the latch is adjustable ( mechanic can do it )
replace it if it shows signs or damage or wear
Slide under the front of the car with the flashlight and pliers. Shine the light up towards the location of the hood latch and locate the latch release cable, Reach in with the pliers and grab the cable as close to the latch as
possible. Once you have a firm grip on the cable, pull on it in the
direction it naturally moves (i.e., towards the fender or down,
depending on its routing). If the latch does not release, have a helper
thump on the hood above the latch with his fist a few times until the
latch releases and the hood opens. good-day !
Three part solution,
1. Lube the hood locks (yes there are two) the one you manuver from the inside (make syre you get the WD40 inside the hole wire and the latch you flipp from the outside when you open the hood.
2. Make sure the return springs for both locks are not broken otherwise no amount of lubing will help.
3. Adjust the lock. Open hood, remove grill losen bolts for the locks slightly, adjust and make sure they engage and release properly, tighten locks again and reassemble.
as far as i can find out no recall on hood latch. you can check with chevy they may have not listed it publicly.
it could have been caused by the latch mechanism slipping a little out of position and not latching completely. check it for allignment upon closing after repair.
