There is a static timing setting from which the ECM advances or retards the spark according to sensor reports and rpms
using a timing light connected to no 1 cylinder set the mark on the pulley to 10 degrees btdc and that will allow the timing to work properly
if there is no scale on the timing cover and a small slot th the pulley flange
do this
remove no 1 plug and get no 1 piston coming up on compression
using a piece of copper wire in the plug hole determine when the piston is at TDC by seeing the wire moves up or down as you move the crank either way
place a white paint line at a convenient place on the cover and on the pulley edge
now move the pulley back ( anticlockwise ) about 3/4 of an inch and put a second mark on the timing cover
That second mark will be close to 10 degrees and will be within the parameters for the ECM to adjust the timing when running
using the timing light again turn the body of the distributor until the pulley mark lines up with the second mark you made and clamp it up at that point

chek battery voltage with engine running if over 14.5 volts the altenator is bad and will need to be replaced high will cause all of these codes

sometimes the ais(automatic idle speed) valve gets loaded with
carbon. its an easy fix. you have to remove the throttle body
invert it and you will see the ais chamber and look in and see if it is
built up with soot. carb cleaner should work.if you can remove
the valve for better cleaning. peterjai

Spray some carb cleaner or tuner cleaner to the intake of the engine. It may just be a dirty MAF sensor. Otherwise it could be a bad sensor. If you can have a scanner connected to the car's ECU it may retrieve some error from the computer.

How did you turn the distributor? There should be no adjustment to it. It will only sit in one spot. Did you turned it while installing it. If so this is the problem. Let me know some details as how you got to where you are.

There is an adjusting screw on the top underneath the distributor... I can loosen it and turn it left or right... The engine idle changes as a result! I never took the distributor out, i just loosened the screw, for some unknown reason, while i was replacing the head gasket... Do you have a description of the codes i gave you?
