When sitting idle in drive or reverse, my car shakes and sputters like it will shut off or until it shuts off. I put it in neutral and that helps but even then it may shut off. But rides and drives fine other than that. I have a tune up and it got worse after that. I have had a fuel injection cleaning as well. I was told that it sounded like a leak in 1 one of my engine air hoses. PLEASE HELP!
You have a intake gasket that's broken. take some carb cleaner in a spray can and as the car is at idle, spray the carb cleaner at the injectors and listen for change in engine idle. spray it especially by the air intake tube/#4 cylinder. it will get nice and smooth. very common problem on a altima your year. its not a job for someone, that doesn't really work on cars. the job per "alldata" pays 6 hours. it will take a lot more, if a novice is doing the job. so to sum it up, you have a intake gasket leak, where the intake bolts to the cylinder head.

My 2001 Nissan Altima GXE has a problem with idle speed variation when stopping or at less the 10 or so miles per hour. This is very irratating because of the jumping and lunging caused by idle variation. I have read of similar problems and a few suspect causes: Mass airflow sensor, intake manifold leak, knock sensor, and others. I was wondering if anyone has come up with a cheap fix. I am not a mechanic, but if a leak in the vaccum system or the intake manifold were the case, could you seal the leak with RTV or similar product. Thanks.
