Replace the battery first! That acid will corrode everything it touches. Once the battery is replaced, you can test if the alternator is working properly.

Get some water and baking soda and wash off he battery and surrounging area before the acid starts to eat away the paint. Don't get any acid on skin.
Suspect Battery may be damaged, but Alternator could be overcharging battery. Recharge Battery and load test. With enging running check voltage at battery and alternator, 13.6 to 14.0 Volts.
