No, you do not need to drain the radiator coolant to change the thermostat in a Kia Amanti. Simply locate the thermostat housing, remove the bolts securing it to the engine, and replace the thermostat. Be sure to properly refill the radiator coolant afterwards.

1. Drain the coolant
The thermostat is located at the end of the top radiator hose. Remove the drain plug from the radiator and flush the coolant into a pan.

2. Remove the Upper radiator hose
Loosen the clamps that connect the upper radiator hose to the housing and remove the hose.

3. Remove the thermostat housing
Loosen the thermostat housing mounting bolts. Remove the housing and pull the thermostat from it.

4. Replace the thermostat
Inspect the new thermostat and install it with a new gasket. Mount the housing and upper radiator hose. Then pour new coolant into the radiator.

The thermostat is located on the side of the water pump, the water pump is located just above the a/c compressor, the thermostat is fed coolant from the radiators lower radiator hose.
Thermostat :
1. drain coolant and tighten drain plug ( easier method : remove radiator cap, get big drain pan, place drain pan under lower radiator hose to radiator connection, remove clamp, slowly remove hose, allow coolant to drain into pan, now is a good time to remove radiator hose and clamp from thermostat housing )
2. remove thermostat cover / cap ( easiest to get at this when front of car is supported by jack stands and right hand side lower cover is removed ).
3. thermostat cap is held on by 3 bolts / remove thermostat.

You will notice that the thermostat's air bleed hole is pointing up and lines up with notch in water pump housing,,

ATTENTION :failure to install new thermostat in the correct location will cause engine to overheat.

1. install new thermostat to water pump, make sure air bleed hole lines up with notch, install and tighten bolts, install a new lower radiator hose, fill cooling system.

most radiators don't have a drain plug it is easier to remove the bottom radiator hose from the radiator & drain it that way.....cheers.

To install a thermostat, locate the drain on the radiator, this drain is at the bottom of the radiator, unscrew it and allow coolant to drain , make sure to remove the radiator cap first, let it drain enough to lower it so you dont make to much of a mess when hose is removed, let it drain about 5min, that should be enough, next is to remove the upper radiator hose, only remove the hose at engine and push it out of the way. the housing that it come off will be the thermostat housing, you will see two bolts that hold it in place, remove the bolts and pull housing off, a little coolant may drain out so keep a drain pan under the car in that area. With housing off you will see the thermostat, pull it out, note the way it comes out as you will need to install the new one the same way, noet that the spring part of the thermostant goes into engine. okay with thermostat out you will clean the mating surface, it uses a rubber oring around the thermostat so this should be easy to clean as there is no gasket material stuck to housing or engine, install gasket on new thermostat,some thermostat come with the gasket already on, if not install new gasket, put into engine , install housing and tighten bolts evenly, install hose and fill cooling system. hope this helps.

The thermostat of a 2002 audi a4 is located between the engine and the radiator. The thermostat is small and crucial. It is meant for the vehicles cooling system. It moderates the flow of coolant into the engine by releasing it when the engine need it the most. The thermostat is designed to open its valve once the temperature of the engine reaches about 200 degrees F. Its purpose is to keep the engine running at a consistent temperature, allowing your Audi A4 to operate at peak performance.

If You are planning on replacing the thermostat, here are the steps to follow to replace them, try to get these instruments (Car ramps, 4-by-4 inch wood block, Metric socket wrench set, Socket extension, Pliers, Drain pan, Empty plastic container, Black marker, Towel, Emery cloth, Gasket seal) then follow the steps below:

1. Raise the front end of your Audi A4 by driving up on a set of car ramps and placing your vehicle in park.
2. Place a 4-by-4 inch wood block behind one of the rear tires to keep the vehicle from rolling backward.
3. Use a socket wrench to remove the pan that covers the bottom of the engine.
4. Locate the red plastic cap that was behind the pan that you just removed. This red cap is your radiator drain plug. Remove the radiator cap from the top of the radiator and then place a drain pan under the red drain plug and turn it with a pair of pliers to allow the coolant to drain completely from the radiator. Once the coolant has completely drained, turn the drain plug to close it off. Be careful when using the pliers on the drain plug that you do not snap the plug off.
5. Slide under the vehicle and locate the thermostat housing that is sitting just above the oil pan drain plug. Pour the drained coolant from the drain pan into an empty plastic container and label the container so that you do not reuse the expelled coolant. Place the empty drain pan under the thermostat housing before you attempt to remove the housing to allow the coolant from the engine to drain into it.
6. Remove the 10 mm bolts that hold the thermostat housing on the engine block with a metric socket wrench. Do not lay directly underneath the thermostat housing as the coolant from the engine will begin to drain as soon as you loosen the bolts on the housing. Keep a towel or cloth with you to clean off any spilled coolant .
7. Remove the thermostat housing from the engine and lift the old thermostat out of the housing. Use a piece of emery cloth to clean the face of the thermostat housing and the engine block where the housing is mounted from any remaining gasket material or debris.
8. Spread a layer of gasket seal around the face of the thermostat housing and place the new thermostat on the housing, with the thermostat spring facing out from the housing. Position the housing back on the engine block and secure it to the block with the bolts.
9. Replace the pan the sits across the bottom of the engine of your Audi A4 and then refill the radiator with coolant and put the radiator cap back on the radiator. Remove the wood block from the back tire of your vehicle. Turn the engine on and drive the Audi A4 off of the car ramps. Allow the engine to run at idle for a few minutes to verify that the thermostat is working properly and then shut the engine off.

Find the location where the upper radiator hose connects to the intake manifold of the engine by tracing it from the radiator to thermostat intake housing bolted to the intake.

2 Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat intake housing by loosening the band clamp that secures it into place. With the clamp loosened, pull the hose off the housing.

3 Remove the two bolts that secure the housing to the intake manifold and then lift the housing off the intake.

4 Lift the thermostat out of the intake manifold and place the new thermostat into the hole. The end of the thermostat with the pin protruding from it sticks out of the intake manifold.

5 Lift the thermostat intake housing gasket off the intake manifold and place the new one onto the intake manifold.

6 Place the thermostat intake housing onto the intake manifold and bolt it into place. Reconnect the hose using the band clamp.

Six-Cylinder Engines

1 Drive the Dodge onto a set of front-end ramps and secure the parking break. Allow adequate time for the radiator fluid to cool down. Thirty minutes is usually adequate.

2 Loosen the petcock on the lower right hand side of the radiator and drain all of the radiator fluid into a drain pan. Close the petcock once drained.

3 Trace the lower radiator hose to the location where the hose connects to the engine block. The metal housing the hose connects to is the lower thermostat outlet. Remove the hose from the outlet by loosening the band clamp and then by pulling the hose off the outlet. Be careful--some fluid will drain from the hose.

4 Remove the two bolts that secure the thermostat outlet to the engine block and pull the thermostat outlet off the block.

5 Discard the O-ring inside the bottom edge of the thermostat outlet and place a new one into the outlet.

6 Pull the thermostat out of the engine block and replace it with a new one. The end with the pin protruding from it sticks out of the engine block.

7 Place the thermostat outlet onto the engine block and secure it into place. Reattach the lower radiator hose with the band clamp.

8 Open the radiator filler cap located on top of the radiator and fill the radiator with the fluid previously drained from the system.

Open the drain-**** on the radiator and completely drain all of the coolant from it. It should take 10 minutes to fully drain. After this time close the drain-**** securely.

Locate the thermostat housing on the side of the engine below the alternator. It's not necessary to remove the hose from the thermostat housing. You can access the thermostat easily once the housing unbolted.

Slide your coolant drain pan directly beneath the thermostat housing. This way any coolant that comes out of the housing will go into the drain pan and not on the ground.

Remove the two bolts holding the heater core housing to the engine with a socket wrench. Pull the housing away from the engine and take out the thermostat.

Install the new thermostat just as you removed the old thermostat. Your new thermostat should have a rubber seal already installed on it, if not you have the wrong replacement part.

Position the thermostat housing back into its original location and then return both of its bolts by hand to insure they thread correctly. Set your 1/4-inch drive torque wrench to 89 inch-lbs. and completely secure both bolts in place.

Refill the radiator with fresh coolant or with the coolant from the drain pan if it's less than three years old. Return the radiator cap and then start the engine on the Bravada. Check for leaks every five minutes until the engine reaches normal operating condition. Take the truck for a test drive once you've determined there aren't any leaks present.
