Acura integra radio unlock code

I have called 2 dealer in on this and each time, I am given the wrong code(s). The dealer wants $100 to pull the radio (again), with no guarantees. I will leave my car doors open on the street one day, and hope someone will walk by and pull my radio for free. My question is, if I get a new radio, do I still have to have the original code to get it to work, in other words, is the code unique to the radio, or is it something programed into the car's anti-theft system.
