My 1991 nissan maxima drives for about 2 minutes it shifts and has plenty of torque. then it will not move in any gear forward or reverse. If you wait a while it will do the same thing it will go forward and reverse and shift but just stops after a short time.

It could be as simple as a shift solenoid but you need to have the transmission checked. It can be diagnosed for about 90 bucks and well worth finding it now then later.
you have a transmission problem your forward clutches may have to change, did you check the shift cable by the neutral switch if all those area check ok the transmission have to be repaired
On a newer car this is a mode the transmission goes into when there is a bad problem with the transmission. It will usually go into 2nd gear where you can drive it safely to get it checked out but will not shift into any other forward gears.
Mke sure that the transmission is working. you can tell if the engine rpm changes when you put it gear (forward or reverse) if it does not then you need to check the level of the transmission fluid for an automatic or you may have clutch problems if it is a manual transmission. if you have more details on the transmission type (auto or manual) and if it is doing anything when you try to get it to move that would be helpful.
Sorry, no solution. I have the exact same problem and it started about the time you posted your problem. If anyone offers a suggestion, please let me know too. thx.
It sounds like the shift lever is out of adjustment by a small amount. Try moving the shift lever a little bit forward & backward from it's normal position to see if this is the case.
shift linkage needs adjusting,,could be bent, easy fix, located along firewall to fram beneath the column, ask your son wut he ran over and didnt tell u about... hope i could help...:)
What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.
What is the speed that this occurs at.
