Please help me get the key out of the ignition. We can't seem to get it out. Have tried the steering wheel lock and yes it is in park...all the way in park. Any other suggestions?
I found it necessary to try two of the the fixes listed before I solved the problem. Here's what I learned, as it relates to my 2000 V70:
1. The lock button on the shifter WAS stuck in the depressed mode. So I squirted a bit of WD-40 and--presto! It was released. But my problem wasn't solved. On examining the button action a little more, I noticed it it wasn't FULLY freed. So, another squirt of WD-40 and a few more press/releases, and---PERFECT. BUT the problem was not solved.
2. I next tried to "lift" the "shift override" button using pliers with gentle-to-moderate pressure so as not to break the plastic. It did lift a little, but still no solution. So I squirted a bit of WD-40 into the space around the button and pushed the button several times to "work-in" the WD-40. No luck. In fact, the button seemed stuck in a depressed mode even more.
3. Finally, to the SOLUTION! Since I could no longer get a grip on the button, I introduced 2 thin-bladed knives to barely exposed opposing side surfaces and pried the switch-button up. Still, no luck, but going back to the pliers and gentle/moderate pressure, I was able to pull the button up, and----SUCCESS!!!!
Notes: I am surprised at how much travel there was in the button--a good 3/16" it seems.
I don't know what caused the button to seize in the depressed state. I never use it and I don't think that I've ever spilled anything on/in it. But its horizontal position just begs for this kind of problem.
Glad that it worked for you. Some of the the other postings that I saw either addressed the problem half-way or were totally flawed. The "shift override" button, considering its horizontal orientation, is very poorly located. It doesn't take much dust or dirt (or worse) to infiltrate the space around the button and clog it beyond the ability of the button's spring to push it back up. Glad that the fix worked and saved you the expense of a trip to the dealer!!! yosihanegbi

CAN'T GET KEY OUT OF IGNITION?
1. check over ride shift button.
2. It is probably depressed and dirty.
3. Spray with wd40.
4. Use nail file to clean out gently on sides.
5. Use nail file (one or two) to gently lift the button up. It will come up pretty high.
6. Spray with wd 40 again.
7. Remove key....
8. Squirt graphite into igntion.

I'll bet this is the "key" to getting your key out - - my son's car had the same problem, but he forgot to mention it when we traded cars for the week! Check the button on your shifter - the button you have to squeeze to change gears - - it's probably stuck "in", rather than popping back out as it should. My son has had this problem for 2 years, and I can't believe he put up with it on a daily basis. The button (it's actually a wedge shape" was barely sticking out of the shift knob, so you'd have to use two fingers of both hands to pull it forward (towards the dash) - busts your manicure, for sure. I sprayed it with WD-40 when I got home, it popped out in a flash, and no problem since!

may take 2 or 3 shots to get it loosened

Mine does the same thing, the button on the shifter sticks, so if you wiggle it & mess with the button it will usually pop back out. Quite annoying but a free fix!

I have encountered the same issue and it means that the ignition connecters are getting mixed readings in extreme temperatures. I live in Canada and it is -20 c and the ignition gets frozen. The best solution for a temporary fix is to turn a hair dryer on high warming up the console not the ignition switch as the components that are failing are in the console underneath the shifter. If you are in extremely cold temperatures this applies to you. Remember that this is a temporary fix and you should consult your nearest Volvo dealer for a new ignition switch which may also be a temporary fix that could be costly, the damage may already be done and non-repairable. Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.

Try graphite...you can buy it powdered but it is also what makes up a pencil's 'lead'. You need to squish some in between the key and the lock it's in. Then wiggle the key as much as you can to work the graphite in (not too hard or the key will break!). If the problem is a stuck tumbler the graphite will unstick it.

Haven't been able to remove the key for over a year. This week I'm having the ETM replaced for a second time. Limp home mode is so exciting on the expressway. The dealer offered $350+ to fix. I'm done with Volvos.
Put the car in park. Engage the parking brake. Turn car off. Key will not come out. Press on brake pedal, turn steering wheel. Key still will not come out. Mess with key, steering column, disengage parking brake, reengage parking brake, take out of park, etc., etc. Key STILL will not come out. Loads of frustration. Eventually key will come out. But it's really getting annoying. It doesn't always happen though. Maybe less than half of the time. Still . . .
there should be an adjustment under the hood top of the trans. between the throttle body and the air filter box find the shift lever cable then follow your service manual for the shift cable replace and adjust. it appears to be in park at the shifter but the trans, is still in reverse try shifting thur all the gears park to low back and forth tens then remove the key. should have a push button release next to the shift handle hold it down try removing the key.
