I would say the code said the sensor was not giving the right signal. Very seldom does a code state to replace a part. There may still be a problem with the camshaft or the relationship to the crank. (timing) As for the temp sensor, if it is faulty you should get a trouble code for it.
The crank sensor on the truck works with the camsensor the crank sensor uses the cam to synchronize and identify where number one piston position is at. It is responsible to fire you injector and for how long is determined by the cam position sensor. On a 96 Dodge diesel the crank sensor is also responsible for you tach reading,your air condition ,and for the alternator.
