Fuel pressure would be a good place to start, check that, When you turn the key to the on position, the electric pump should run for a few seconds & build pressure.
Is the engine light on? If so run a scan and pull the codes.
After it dies and you try to restart, is it getting fire to the plugs? Let me know what you find.

it does the same starts but won,t idle engine light goes on once in a while
Check the IAC (idle air control) solenoid, the will get carbon on them and stick...You can remove & clean it with some electical contact cleaner to see if that helps. Go ahead and run a diagnostic scan too, even though the check engine light is not on now, the previous codes that caused it to come on may be stored in the engine computers memory. It would be helpful to know. Below is a link of the IAC and general instructions.
