Wont idle no engine code - 1998 Pontiac Bonneville

  • Justin Kahl Sep 19, 2013

Could be the mass air flow sensor. Unplug the MAF and if it runs the MAF is bad.

The IAC (idle air control) valve could be defective...often they go bad or stick and never set a fault code.

Wont idle

Well the code is for a problem with the EVAP system which is what the computer uses to vent the gas tank. I doubt that would cause the engine not to idle but anything is possible.
You may have to get the throttle body checked, it could be gummed up or the idle air control valve may not be working.

My car wont stay idling

Lets start with figuring out why the check engine light is on. You can get a blinkout of the the code by switching you key to the on and off position three times quickly and leaving it in the on position on the final time (note, do not take the key so far that it tries to start the engine). So start with the key in, and engine off, quickly turn the key to on, then off, then on, then off, then on and leave it there. Now watch your check engine light. It will blink out any codes that may be stored. The blinking will have breaks between each code and each code is a two digit number. For instance, blink short pause, blink blink, long pause, blink, blink, blink, pause, blink, blink, would be codes 12 and 32. I believe the final code is 55 and just simply means "end of codes". That should at least tell you if its an issue the ECU has detected. You can do a quick google search to find out what each code it spits out means. As for a guess as to why it isn't idling...I've seen everything from a failing fuel pump (inadequate pressure), to a clogged EGR valve cause this. Could be quite a few things unfortunately. Good luck!

03 Chev express 2500 wont stay running at an Idle, code reader says IAC valve but this engine dosnt have the IAC valve on it any Ideas

Hi there,

Your engine does indeed have an Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve.

It is a sensor bolted to your throttle body - look for an electrical connector.

A malfunctioning IAC can cause improper idle of your engine.

2005 kia spectra wont start. throwing codes 1505, 1507 and an emissions evap. short code. what is the possible fix?

P1505 - Idle-Speed Control Valve Closing Solenoid Control Circuit Electrical
P1507 - Idle-Speed Control Valve Opening Solenoid Control Circuit Signal Low

The knock sensor will cause the ignition timing to ******, which will cause a lack of power, however, it's important that the engine camshaft/crankshaft timing was set properly when rebuilding the engine, if this is off, the engine will have no power and you could set the knock sensor code.

Hope thats help.
